For the Cerritos College baseball
team, one-run games are no stranger to the team.
This season alone, the Falcons have been involved in
16 of them, including their Southern California
Playoff Play-in game at Orange Coast College on
Tuesday. But, just like three of their last four
setbacks, the Falcons came out on the short end of
another one-run contest, as they dropped a 4-3
decision to the Pirates and were 8-8 on the year in
one-run contests. Cerritos (27-17), seeded 17th out
of the 18 teams, fought back from a 4-0 deficit to
get to within a run against Orange Coast, and had
the bases loaded in two of the final three innings
but did not score. Orange Coast (24-20), seeded
16th, now moves on to the first round and will play
either #1 Cypress or #2 Riverside this weekend.
After spotting the Pirates a 4-0
lead through three innings, Cerritos made a move in
the top of the fourth inning. With two outs,
sophomore shortstop
Scott
Patynik (Whittier
HS) doubled and came home on a base hit
by sophomore designated hitter
Ryan
Bateman (Santa
Fe HS). Freshman catcher
Phil
Rodriguez (Norwalk
HS) followed with a single
before sophomore first baseman
Ryan
Montgomery (La
Mirada HS) doubled in the second run.
The third run came on a ground ball to third base by
freshman right fielder
Jake Moore
(Palisade, CO
HS) that was mishandled for an error.
Sophomore pitcher
Sheldon
McGregor (La
Mirada HS) came on in relief of freshman
starter
Kevin
Camacho (Santa
Fe HS), who allowed all four runs and
eight hits. In his 3 1/3 innings, McGregor limited
the Pirates to four hits and struck out four, with
sophomore
Brad Schwarzenbach (St.
John Bosco HS) recording the final two
outs.
In the seventh inning, the
Falcons were able to load the bases with two outs on
a single by Montgomery, while freshman leftfielder
Andrew
Baslow (Chatsworth
HS) and sophomore center fielder
Phil
Van Doren (La
Mirada HS) were both hit by pitches.
However, Luyben was called out on strikes to end the
rally. In the top of the ninth inning, Orange Coast
relief pitcher Chris Palmer walked both Montgomery
and Moore to start the inning. After Mark Haderlein
was brought on in relief, he hit Baslow on an 0-2
pitch to load the bases with no outs.
Freshman third baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia
HS) popped up to second base before Van
Doren grounded into a double play to end the game
and the season for the Falcons.
Montgomery led the team with
three hits and a walk, while Patynik collected two
hits. |
