A trio of players off the
Cerritos College baseball team, who finished in a
tie for second place in the South Coast Conference
and ended the year 27-17, have signed letters of
intent with four-year universities. In addition, a
player off last year's squad has also made his
choice for a four-year school after sitting out this
season.
Heading the last of players is
sophomore pitcher
Sheldon
McGregor (La
Mirada HS), who went 9-1 on the year
with a 2.81 ERA and was a 2nd Team All-SCC
selection. McGregor will be pitching for Cal Poly
Pomona next year, while sophomore pitcher/outfielder
Phil
Van Doren (La
Mirada HS) will be heading to Chico
State University. This year Van Doren led the team
with a .337 batting average and drove in a team-high
31 runs and was a 1st Team All-SCC pick as a utility
player. On the mound, he was 4-3 with one save and a
2.65 ERA in 54.1 innings of work. The highlight of
his season was a complete-game one-hitter against
Ventura College. The third player from this season
to sign is catcher/pitcher
Brad Schwarzenbach (St.
John Bosco HS), who was the team's
closer and spot starter and will be playing at Lewis
& Clark State next year. He posted a 2-5 record on
the mound with four saves to go along with a 1.84
ERA and 41 strikeouts in 44 innings. As a hitter, he
batted .263 with 13 RBI and was an honorable mention
selection. He was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in
the 32nd Round last year after being selected by the
San Francisco Giants the year before.
McGregor will be joining a
Broncos team that went 20-31 this past season and
had a team ERA of 5.92. His ability to pitch a lot
of innings (99.1 as a sophomore) and his experience
is what the coaching staff was looking to add to a
staff that will be dominated by seniors next year.
With Van Doren, he is joining a perennial Division
II powerhouse that is currently playing in the
National Championship tournament. The team is 43-20
on the year and pitch by committee, as 12 of the 14
pitchers have all won at least one game this year.
They rely heavily on community college players and
are only losing three pitchers to graduation.
Another powerful program is Lewis & Clark State, and
NAIA program located on Lewiston, Idaho. They have
won 13 national championships since 1984 and are
currently 42-7 on the year and begin the NAIA
Baseball World Series National Championship
Tournament on Friday on their home field as they
open with Lubbock Christian (TX).
Joining the group of players from
this season is third baseman
Gabe Santos
(Bellflower
HS), who has signed with California
State University, East Bay and will have two seasons
remaining. As a sophomore, he batted .293 with a
team-high 12 doubles, four home runs and added 26
RBI. Former Falcon teammate
Jose Reyes
is currently playing at East Bay, where they went
25-12 and played in the NCAA Division III West
Regional for the third since since 2001. In addition
to playing third base, Santos can also be used and
first base, behind the plate or in the outfield. |
