01.07.08 - Former baseball player named hitting coach
Former Cerritos College baseball player Darrell Sherman, who still holds four single-season school records, was recently named as the hitting coach for Eugene, the Single-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. Sherman, who was selected by the Padres in the sixth round of the 1989 amateur draft, reached the major leagues in 1993 and appeared in 37 games for the Padres, hitting .222 with two RBI. After being claimed by the Colorado Rockies in 1994 and the Seattle Mariners in 1995, Sherman finished out his professional playing career in Mexico as an all-star for three different teams, playing from 2000-2002 and then again in 2006. 12.03.07 - Ex-Cerritos baseball players to run minor league team
Both Ever Magallanes and Dan Ricabal were members of the Cerritos College baseball team during their collegiate playing days, but were never on the same team. They will get their chance to run a team together after Magallanes was recently named the manager of the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes, an Advanced-A California League affiliate of the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, while Ricabal was appointed the team’s pitching coach...[more]

09.08.07 - Ex-Cerritos baseball coaches on the move
Just one week ago, former Cerritos College baseball player and head coach George Horton stepped down after 11 years as the head coach at Cal State Fullerton to assume the same position of the resurrected baseball program at the University of Oregon. Looking to fill the position with a former Titan, they also filled the position at Cal State Fullerton with another former Falcon baseball player and head coach, Dave Serrano. For the past three years, Serrano was the head coach at UC Irvine and led his Anteaters to the College World Series for the first time. Each year, the NCAA Division I College Baseball World Series is a showcase for the top teams in the country. This season, two of the eight teams will be under the direction of former Cerritos College players and coaches. George Horton, who led the Cal State Fullerton Titans to the national championship in 2004, will joined by his former player and coaching pupil this season. Dave Serrano, who is in just his third year as the head coach at UC Irvine, will be taking the first Anteater team to the College World Series in the school's history...[more]
 

05.30.07 - Robbie Dominguez signs with Mariners
Former Cerritos College baseball pitcher Robbie Dominguez (El Rancho HS), who was drafted in the 45th round of the Major League Draft last season by Seattle, has signed a minor league contract with the Mariners and has reported to their Arizona camp. As a sophomore this past season, Dominguez went 9-3 on the season with a 2.55 ERA and was named 1st Team All-South Coast Conference, as the Falcons won a share of the conference championship and concluded the season with a 33-13 record...[more]

05.12.07 - Season comes to an end for the Falcons after loss
The Cerritos College baseball team saw their season come to an end after their 4-3 loss to Moorpark College in the second game of the first round of the Southern California Regional Playoffs Saturday morning at Kincaid Field. The two-game sweep knocked the Falcons (33-13) out of the playoffs, while the Raiders (27-17) move on to the Super Regional next weekend...[more]

05.11.07 - Falcons in a hole after losing, 5-4
After jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, the Cerritos College baseball team saw Moorpark College score five unanswered runs and went on to lose, 5-4 in the first game of the Southern California Regional Playoffs. Game two of the best two-out-of-three series will be at Kincaid Field on Saturday at 11:00 a.m., with a second game to be played 30 minutes afterwards, if necessary. 05.09.07 - Baseball team has 12 named All-Conference
In addition to having 12 Cerritos College baseball players named to the All-South Coast Conference teams, head coach Ken Gaylord was also named one of the Tri-Coaches of the Year after leading the Falcons to a share of the conference championship. The title marks their first since the 2003 season and 29th in school history. The coach of the year honor was also the fourth for Gaylord while he has been the head coach at Cerritos, while he also won it twice as the head coach at Long Beach City. In addition to the top honor going to Gaylord, freshman pitcher John Ortega (Downey HS) was voted as the conference's Pitcher of the Year. 05.06.07 - Baseball seeded #9 and will play at LA Pierce
Despite earning a share of the South Coast Conference championship and having the second most wins in Southern California (33), the Cerritos College baseball team is being sent on the road for the first round of the Southern California Regional Baseball Playoffs. The Falcons, 33-11 on the year, were seeded #9 and will travel to #8-seeded Los Angeles Pierce College for a best two-out-of-three series starting next Friday. After the dust had settled on the South Coast Conference baseball season, it shows that there is a three-way tie for first place. Fortunately for Cerritos College, they are one of the three teams, as the Falcons posted an 18-6 mark along with El Camino College and Los Angeles Harbor College. El Camino, who won the season series against both teams, 2-1, will go into the Southern California Regional Playoff Seeding Meeting as the top seed from the conference, while Cerritos will go as the second team. 05.01.07 - Complete game performance by John Ortega leads Falcons
Cerritos College freshman pitcher John Ortega (Downey HS) pitched his first complete game of the season, as he led the Falcons to a crucial 3-1 South Coast Conference win against cross-town rival Long Beach City College on Tuesday afternoon at Kincaid Field. With the win, the Falcons conclude their regular season 32-11 overall and 18-6 in the SCC, while the Vikings dropped to 22-20 overall and 12-10 in conference play. Cerritos must now wait until next Monday to find out where they will be seeded in the Southern California Regional Playoffs, which starts on May 12-13 with the first round being a best two-out-of-three series...[more]

04.28.07 - Throwing error in the 13th results in loss to LBCC
The Cerritos College baseball team had to go to the well many times in their South Coast Conference baseball game at Long Beach City College on Saturday afternoon. After falling behind 3-0, they scored three times in the top of the sixth inning. They also worked out of defensive jams in the ninth, 11th and 12 innings and appeared to have escaped again in the 13th inning. But a throwing error by freshman second baseman Guillermo Garcia (Artesia HS) allowed the winning run to score in the bottom of the 13th inning and the Falcons were defeated, 4-3. With the loss, their fourth in the last five games, Cerritos is now 31-11 overall and 17-6 in conference play, as they close out the regular season at home against the Vikings at 2:30 p.m. LBCC, who will more than likely miss the playoffs, are 22-19 overall and in fifth place with a 12-9 mark...[more]

04.26.07 - Key pitching and timely hitting lead to big win
After falling out of first place in the South Coast Conference for the first time all season on Tuesday when they lost to East Los Angeles College, the Cerritos College baseball team was in dire need of a win. The Falcons broke a 1-1 tie with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to defeat the Huskies, 4-1 on Thursday afternoon at Kincaid Field. The win puts Cerritos at 31-10 overall and keeps them in at least second place with a 17-5 SCC record, while ELAC dropped to 28-12 overall and 14-6 in the SCC. 04.24.07 - Third loss in a row drops team into second place
Lately, the Cerritos College baseball team has found themselves having to play from behind early in the game, and the end result has been a series of devastating losses. The third in the row for the Falcons came on Tuesday afternoon when the team dropped a 6-2 South Coast Conference game at East Los Angeles College. The setback knocked Cerritos out of first place in the SCC for the first time this season and they are now 30-10 on the year and 16-5 in conference play. Los Angeles Harbor moved into first place with a 15-4 mark, while both the Huskies and El Camino College are 14-5. 04.21.07 - Falcons suffer first back-to-back losses
The Cerritos College baseball team couldn't have picked a worse time to suffer back-to-back losses for the first time on the year. The Falcons, fighting to hold on to first place in the South Coast Conference, dropped a 4-1 home decision to El Camino College on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, Cerritos, who entered the week ranked #1 in Southern California, dropped to 30-9 on the year, while they are now 16-4 in conference play. The Warriors moved closer to the head of the pack with the win and are now 26-12 on the season and 13-6 in the SCC. The Falcons, who have just four regular season games remaining, must now face hard-charging East Los Angeles College, who entered the day 12-5 in the conference. 04.19.07 - Team takes a hit in quest for conference title
The Cerritos College baseball team's quest for their first South Coast Conference championship since 2003 took a major hit on Thursday when they dropped a 7-3 decision at El Camino College. The loss by the Falcons, who entered the week as the new #1-ranked team in Southern California, dropped their overall record to 30-8. But, more importantly, they fell to 16-3 in the conference, while there is a tight race for the top four spots. Behind Cerritos, Los Angeles Harbor College is now 13-4 (21-16 overall), followed by East Los Angeles College (26-11) and the Warriors (25-12), who are both 12-5. Sophomore outfielder Nick Armstrong (Marina HS) ripped a bases loaded triple and sophomore pitcher Robbie Dominguez (El Rancho HS) pitched eight innings of five-hit ball to lead the Cerritos College baseball team to an 8-1 South Coast Conference win at Compton College on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons, ranked #2 in Southern California, are 30-7 on the year and 16-2 in the SCC, while the Tartars dropped to 2-34 overall and 1-15. The Cerritos College baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and used that output to post a 10-4 South Coast Conference win over Compton College at Kincaid Field on Saturday afternoon. Freshman outfielder Anthony Topete (Norwalk HS) singled home freshmen first baseman Trever Blood (La Mirada HS) with the game-winning run in the top of the 10th inning to lead the Cerritos College baseball team to a 3-2 South Coast Conference win over Mt. San Antonio College on Thursday afternoon. The win improves the Falcons to 28-7 overall and they hold a two-game lead in the SCC with a 14-2 mark, while the Mounties dropped to 16-19 overall and 6-10. 04.10.07 - Cerritos goes down in extra innings, 5-4
Try as they might, the Cerritos College baseball team was unable to come back from a deficit for a third time in their South Coast Conference baseball game at Kincaid Field on Tuesday afternoon against Mt. San Antonio College. After spotting the Mounties a 2-0 lead, the Falcons tied the game at 2-2. When Mt. San Antonio scored a run in the top of the 10th inning, Cerritos scored one of their own. In the 11th inning, Mt. SAC scored twice off freshman closer Miguel Flores (St. John Bosco HS) to take a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Cerritos scored once and had a runner at third base with two outs, but could not push the run across and took the loss. 04.05.07 - Falcons come back to win two of three at Hancock
After falling behind in all three of their games at the Allan Hancock Tournament during Spring Break, the Cerritos College baseball team was able to come back and win two of the games, which improves their season record to 27-6 on the year. 03.31.07 - Cerritos makes the most of hits for 5-0 win
Although the Cerritos College baseball team was only able to get four hits in their South Coast Conference game against Pasadena City College at Kincaid Field on Saturday afternoon, they came up with the big hit when needed. Sophomore catcher Phil Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) drilled a bases loaded triple in the bottom of the third inning to help lead the Falcons to a 5-0 win against the Lancers. With the win, Cerritos, ranked #1 in Southern California, is now 25-5 overall and 13-1 in the SCC, while Pasadena City dropped to 6-24 on the year and 3-11 in conference play. The Cerritos College baseball team scored four runs in the top of the fifth inning and freshman starting pitcher John Ortega (Downey HS) went seven innings, as the Falcons posted a 5-1 South Coast Conference win against Pasadena City College at Jackie Robinson Field on Thursday afternoon. With the win, Cerritos increased their lead over second place El Camino College to 2 1/2 games, as the Warriors had a bye. 03.27.07 - Falcons win suspended game before dropping first in the SCC
It may have taken 27 days, but the Cerritos College baseball team finally finished off their 12-10 South Coast Conference win at Los Angeles Harbor College. The team, who had their March 1 game suspended due to darkness in the bottom of the eighth inning with Cerritos leading, 11-10, finally finished off that contest with a big conference victory. The two teams then played their regularly scheduled game, with the Seahawks breaking a 5-5 tie with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning to record a 6-5 victory. The loss by the Falcons (23-5 overall, 11-1 in SCC) ended their 11-game conference winning streak and leaves them with a two-game lead over second place El Camino College, while LA Harbor is now 15-13 overall and 8-4 in conference play...[more]

On the strength of their 8-4 win over Los Angeles Harbor College at Kincaid Field on Saturday afternoon, the Cerritos College baseball team increased their lead in the South Coast Conference to three games. The win by the Falcons improved their record to 10-0 in the SCC, while they are now 22-4 on the year. As for the Seahawks, they dropped to 7-3 in the SCC and are now 14-12 on the year. The two teams will have two games on Tuesday, with one being the completion of a suspended game from March 1. Cerritos College freshman shortstop Jerry Pena (Los Altos HS) became the fifth player in school history to hit for the cycle, as he recorded an infield single in the top of the ninth inning to complete the feat, in an 11-3 South Coast Conference win over Los Angeles City College at Griffith Park on Thursday. With the win, the Falcons, ranked #1 in Southern California, are 21-4 overall and sit atop the conference standings with a 9-0 record. Three big games are in store for Cerritos, as they host Los Angeles Harbor College on Saturday at noon, and then travel to Wilmington to face the Seahawks with two games on the line. Cerritos College freshman closer Miguel Flores (St. John Bosco HS) found himself in a jam in the top of the ninth inning against Long Beach City College in a South Coast Conference baseball game at Kincaid Field on Thursday afternoon. After loading the bases, he got Mark Ruiz to fly out to sophomore Andrew Baslow (Chatsworth HS) in left field to end the game and preserve a 4-1 victory. With the win, the Falcons, ranked #1 in Southern California, improve to 19-4 on the season and 7-0 in conference play. The Vikings, the defending state champions, fell to 11-13 and 4-3. Freshman pitcher John Ortega (Downey HS) had a perfect game going through 6 1/3 innings against East Los Angeles College at Kincaid Field on Tuesday afternoon. He then allowed a single to right-center field, but it was the only batter to reach base in his eight innings of work, as the Cerritos College baseball team posted a critical 6-0 win over the Huskies in a South Coast Conference game. 03.01.07 - Darkness halts game in 8th inning
The Cerritos College baseball team was holding on to a close 11-10 lead over host Los Angeles Harbor College on Thursday afternoon when the game was called due to darkness. According to the rules, the game will be resumed where it left off, which was at the start of the bottom of the 8th inning, when the two teams meet at LA Harbor, which will be Tuesday, March 27. The game marked the first South Coast Conference contest for the Falcons (12-4), who will travel to Griffith Park to face Los Angeles City College tomorrow. The game was originally scheduled for Tuesday, but was moved due to wet grounds.

02.24.07 - Team sees 5-0 lead slip away in 7-5 loss to Fullerton
Through the first month of the season, when the Cerritos College baseball team was staked to a 5-0 lead, it generally meant "lights out" for their opponent. But when the Falcons (12-4) saw their 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning against Fullerton College on Saturday turn into a 7-5 loss, it left the players and coaching staff scratching their heads. Not only did Cerritos have their closer, freshman Miguel Flores (St. John Bosco HS) on the mound, he had not allowed an earned run and only five hits through 15 innings on the year...[more]

02.21.07 - Falcons get complete-game performance in 4-1 win
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kevin Camacho (Santa Fe HS) pitched a complete-game six-hitter to lead the Cerritos College baseball team to a 4-1 non-conference win over Chaffey College at Kincaid Field on Wednesday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons are now 12-3 on the year, while the Panthers dropped to 6-7. The team will now travel to Fullerton College on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. game in hopes of avenging one of their three losses on the season. 02.20.07 - Win over Golden West puts record at 11-3
The Cerritos College baseball team finished a successful pre-season run through the Orange Empire Conference with a 5-2 win at Golden West College on Tuesday afternoon. With the win, the Falcons are now 11-3 on the season, after going 3-2 against the nearby conference, which included a suspended game against Saddleback College with Cerritos leading, 3-0 in the sixth inning. The Falcons will now host Chaffey College on Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. in their second meeting of the season. In their first game, the Panthers won an 8-6 game that was halted after eight innings when dark clouds and wind turned to rain...[more]

02.17.07 - Fullerton hands Falcons first home loss
From the outset of their non-conference game against Fullerton College at Kincaid Field in Saturday afternoon, the Cerritos College baseball team found themselves in a hole they spent the entire afternoon trying to escape from. After a shaky first two innings on the mound, the Falcon pitchers had allowed four runs, three hits, five walks, a hit batter and an error, which resulted in a 4-0 deficit. It would be too much to recover from, as Cerritos dropped an 8-2 decision to the Hornets and saw their record drop to 10-3 overall, while Fullerton improved to 10-3. It also marked the first home loss of the season for the Falcons, who won their first seven. 02.15.07 - Falcons win fourth one-run game of the season
The Cerritos College baseball team continued their run through the Orange Empire Conference at Kincaid Field with a 3-2 win over Irvine Valley College on Thursday afternoon. The Falcons (10-2 overall) are now 2-1 in games against teams from the OEC this week and will close out their week by hosting Fullerton College on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. After falling behind 2-1 to the Lasers (5-7), Cerritos scored single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to pull out the win. Generally accustomed to the spacious confines of Kincaid Field, the Cerritos College baseball team fell victim to the small ballpark at Santa Ana College, allowing two big home runs, and suffered a 9-1 non-conference loss on Tuesday. 02.10.07 - Falcons pound Victor Valley, 22-2
When Kincaid Field was built in the late 1950's it was designed to take advantage of good pitching, but its spacious outfield also provided plenty of room to hit balls into the gap and run for extra bases. The Cerritos College baseball team displayed everything the field was meant to represent, as they clubbed 21 hits, with seven doubles and two triples, in posting a convincing 22-2 home win over Victor Valley College in the Casey Stengel Tournament on Saturday afternoon. The Cerritos College baseball team continued their hot hitting, as they slapped out 13 hits in their 12-9 non-conference win over Los Angeles Valley College at Kincaid Field on Friday afternoon. 02.03.07 - Falcons use pitching and bats to take three games
Over the course of one weekend, the Cerritos College baseball team showed their ability to shut teams down with their pitching and defense, while they also displayed an ability to slug out a victory. The Falcons opened the weekend with a 2-1, 12-inning victory at Palomar College on Friday and then swept a double-header at San Diego Mesa College on Saturday, 10-5 and 17-15. For the first three games of the season, the Cerritos College baseball team relied on their solid pitching and timely hitting to jump out to a 3-0 start to the season. In their non-conference game at Chaffey College on Tuesday, the Falcons were able to get hits when they needed them, but saw their pitching fail them. In an abbreviated eight-inning game due to darkness and weather conditions, the Cerritos pitchers allowed 12 walks, which resulted in four Panther runs. Heading into the season, the Cerritos College baseball coaching staff knew that solid pitching and timely hitting would be the key ingredients to their success this year. Through their first three games, they have limited their opponents to just five runs and are 3-0 on the season after a 3-1 home win against Glendale College (0-4) on Sunday. Last season, the Falcons were 8-8 in one-run games and have already played two games that have been decided by two or less runs. 01.27.07 - Wild pitch scores winning run in 10th inning
Freshman infielder/pitcher Miguel Flores (St. John Bosco HS) was at the plate with runners at second and third base in the bottom of the 10th inning looking to drive in the game-winning run against Rio Hondo College on Saturday afternoon. Before he could be the batting and pitching hero, Roadrunners pitcher Brian Albert uncorked a wild pitch, scoring freshman first baseman Trever Blood (La Mirada HS) from third base for a 3-2 Falcon win. 01.26.07 - Falcons open the season with 6-2 victory
Sophomore left fielder Andrew Baslow (Chatsworth HS) went 2-for-4 with three RBI, including a two-run single in the bottom of the fifth inning, to lead the Cerritos College baseball team to a 6-2 home win in their season opener Friday afternoon. Baslow's two-run single broke a 2-2 tie, with the Falcons scoring another run in the inning and adding an insurance run in the eighth.
