Try as they might, the Cerritos College baseball team was unable to come back from a deficit for a third time in their South Coast Conference baseball game at Kincaid Field on Tuesday afternoon against Mt. San Antonio College. After spotting the Mounties a 2-0 lead, the Falcons tied the game at 2-2. When Mt. San Antonio scored a run in the top of the 10th inning, Cerritos scored one of their own. In the 11th inning, Mt. SAC scored twice off freshman closer Miguel Flores (St. John Bosco HS) to take a 5-3 lead. In the bottom of the inning, Cerritos scored once and had a runner at third base with two outs, but could not push the run across and took the loss. The setback drops the Falcons to 27-7 overall and 13-2 in the SCC, while the Mounties improved to 16-18 overall and 6-9 in conference play. The two meet again at Mt. SAC at 2:30 p.m. on Thursday.
In the top of the 11th inning, Mt. SAC third baseman Ryan Dowell drilled a two-run double into left-center field to drive in pinch-runner Chris Carrico and outfielder Mark Reynoso to take their 5-3 advantage. After sophomore pitcher Lalo Ceniceros (El Rancho HS) came on in relief of Flores, he got the final two outs to end the inning. Cerritos came right back in their half of the inning, as freshman second baseman Guillermo Garcia (Artesia HS) led off with a walk against Ricardo Serrano. After a wild pitch moved him to second base, and two outs were recorded, sophomore outfielder David Gurbach (Aliso Niguel HS) singled to right field to put runners at first and third. Serrano was then called for a balk, which advanced both runners and put the score at 5-4. Xavier Munoz came in to relieve Serrano and uncorked a wild pitch, advancing Gurbach to third base. However, sophomore outfielder Nick Armstrong (Marina HS) was called out on strikes to end the game.
The extra-inning affair spoiled a solid pitching performance from Mountie starter Matt Morse, who pitched 9 2/3 innings and struck out seven. Falcon starter Robbie Dominguez (El Rancho HS) went 7 2/3 innings and allowed two runs on eight hits before giving way to sophomore Kevin Camacho (Santa Fe HS).
Trailing 2-0 heading into the bottom of the fourth inning, freshman shortstop Jerry Pena (Los Altos HS) led off with a double and came home on a base hit by sophomore catcher Phil Rodriguez (Norwalk HS). It was the exact same combination in the bottom of the sixth inning that tied the game, 2-2, as Pena doubled and Rodriguez drive him in with a single.
Mt. SAC took a 3-2 lead in the top of the 10th inning, as Scott Lyons hit a ball to the deepest part of the ballpark. Armstrong, who covers more ground than any other outfielder in the state, had the ball deflect off the tip of his glove at the 410-sign in left-center field, with Lyons winding up with a triple. A sacrifice fly by Richard Escalera brought home Lyons. Cerritos tied the game in the bottom of the inning, as Gurbach led off with a single, moved to second base on a single by sophomore infielder Jose Serrano (Artesia HS), and then scored on an infield hit by freshman first baseman Trever Blood (La Mirada HS).
