The Cerritos College baseball team scored six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and used that output to post a 10-4 South Coast Conference win over Compton College at Kincaid Field on Saturday afternoon. The win by the Falcons improves their season record to 29-7 overall and they remain in first place with a 15-2 record in the SCC. The Tartars dropped to 2-33 overall and 1-14 in the conference. The two teams will now play at Compton at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
Through the first six batters in the bottom of the fourth inning, only three had hit the ball out of the infield, but the team had three runs and the bases still loaded to show for it. Freshman third baseman Miguel Flores (St. John Bosco HS) led off with a single through the infield, followed by a bunt hit from freshman designated hitter Guillermo Garcia (Artesia HS). On the play, nobody covered third base, so Flores kept running and beat the throw to the bag, while Garcia took second base on the play. Freshman outfielder David Gurbach (Aliso Niguel HS) followed with a two-run single to left field. Sophomore outfielder Nick Armstrong (Marina HS) and sophomore second baseman Jose Serrano (Artesia HS) both bunted for singles to load the bases.
After an out was recorded, freshman first baseman Trever Blood (La Mirada HS) drove in two with a base hit, while sophomore catcher Phil Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) picked up an RBI on a sacrifice fly. Freshman outfielder Anthony Topete (Norwalk HS) closed out the scoring in the inning with an RBI single.
At that time, the Falcons held a 9-1 lead, which was enough for sophomore starting pitcher Kevin Camacho (Santa Fe HS), who struggled at times with his control. In seven innings, Camacho allowed three runs (two earned), seven hits, two walks and hit two batters. As the beneficiary of so much offense, he was able to improve his record on the mound to 7-1 Sophomore Lalo Ceniceros (El Rancho HS) pitched the final two innings.
Two consecutive Tartar errors by second baseman Marco Camacho opened the door for the Falcons in the bottom of the first inning, as they scored three unearned runs. The big hit in the inning was a two-run single by Topete, while Flores and drove in a run with a hit.
On the day, Garcia led the way by going 3-for-4, while Armstrong (two runs), Serrano, Blood, Topete (three RBI) and Flores all had two hits for Cerritos, who recorded 14 on the day. Compton catcher Christian Holbert led his team by going 2-for-2 with three RBI.
