Lately, the Cerritos College baseball team has found themselves having to play from behind early in the game, and the end result has been a series of devastating losses. The third in the row for the Falcons came on Tuesday afternoon when the team dropped a 6-2 South Coast Conference game at East Los Angeles College. The setback knocked Cerritos out of first place in the SCC for the first time this season and they are now 30-10 on the year and 16-5 in conference play. Los Angeles Harbor moved into first place with a 15-4 mark, while both the Huskies and El Camino College are 14-5. The Falcons will try to snap their losing streak on Thursday when they play ELAC at 2:30 p.m. at Kincaid Field.
Things started off well in the top of the first inning for Cerritos, as sophomore outfielder Nick Armstrong (Marina HS) led off with a base hit. After an out was recorded, freshman shortstop Jerry Pena (Los Altos HS) tripled, scoring Armstrong and giving the Falcons an early 1-0 advantage. That lead would disappear quickly, as the Huskies scored three times on sophomore Robbie Dominguez (El Rancho HS) in the bottom of the inning. They collected four singles and one batter was hit by a pitch. After picking up two more runs in the bottom of the second inning, the Falcons spent the rest of the game trying to catch up.
As the offense has struggled, so has the team and although they had nine hits in the game, Cerritos hit into double plays in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings. They had Armstrong at second base with one one in the second inning, but could not bring him home, while runners at first and second in the fifth inning didn't yield any runs. The other run on the day was a lead-off solo home run from freshman outfielder Anthony Topete (Norwalk HS), his first of the season.
