The Cerritos
College baseball team continued their
hot hitting, as they slapped out 13 hits
in their 12-9 non-conference win over
Los Angeles Valley College at Kincaid
Field on Friday afternoon. The win was
the fourth win in a row for the Falcons,
who are now 7-1 on the season and 4-0 at
home, while the Monarchs are now 4-5.
Cerritos will now host Victor Valley
College on Saturday in a 2:00 p.m.
contest.
The win didn't come
without one of the rarest occurrences
ever seen in a game. In the bottom of
the first inning and runners at first
and second base with one out, freshman
first baseman
Trever Blood (La Mirada
HS) appeared to have hit his first
home run of the season. But, as he
rounded first base, he passed teammate
Andrew Baslow (Chatsworth
HS) who had only take two steps off
the base in case the ball was caught.
After a discussion by the umpiring crew,
it was ruled that Blood was out and so
was his home run, although he was
credited with a two-run sacrifice fly
because both runners were awarded home
plate.
The Falcons did
scored in six of the eight innings in
which they batted and also took
advantage off 11 walks issued by the LA
Valley pitchers and turned them into
five runs, while a hit batter also came
around to score. Each time Cerritos
would take the lead, the Monarchs came
right back to tie the game, until the
Falcons broke a 4-4 tie with two runs in
the bottom of the fourth inning after LA
Valley tied the game with two runs of
their own in the top of the stanza. In
the fourth, freshman designated hitter
Guillermo Garcia (Artesia
HS) and sophomore outfielder
Jake Moore (Palisade,
CO HS) each singled after freshman
Miguel Flores (St. John
Bosco HS) opened the inning with a
walk. After a double play that cut down
Flores at the plate, sophomore infielder
Jose Serrano (Artesia
HS) drove home two runs with a base
hit and the Falcons did not relinquish
their lead the rest of the game.
Cerritos did not fare
well on the mound, as sophomore starter
Kevin Camacho (Santa Fe
HS) allowed four earned runs and
four walks in five innings, but did earn
the win. Sophomore reliever
Lalo Ceniceros (El
Rancho HS) didn't help his cause,
as his throwing error opened up a
two-run sixth inning for the Monarchs
and finished the game by allowing four
unearned runs in 1 1/3 innings of work
and walked two batters. Flores did come
in and shut down LA Valley with 2 2/3
innings of work and earned his second
save of the season.
Garcia led the team
with a 4-for-4 day with three RBI and a
walk, while Baslow drew four walks and
was 1-for-1 with three runs scored.
Moore, sophomore catcher
Phil Rodriguez (Norwalk
HS) and freshman shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los Altos
HS) all slapped out four hits,
while Rodriguez and Pena each drove in
two runs.
