When Kincaid
Field was built in the late 1950's
it was designed to take advantage of
good pitching, but its spacious
outfield also provided plenty of
room to hit balls into the gap and
run for extra bases. The Cerritos
College baseball team displayed
everything the field was meant to
represent, as they clubbed 21 hits,
with seven doubles and two triples,
in posting a convincing 22-2 home
win over Victor Valley College in
the Casey Stengel Tournament on
Saturday afternoon. The win improved
the Falcons season record to 8-1,
while they are now 5-0 at home,
while the Rams fell to 2-5. Cerritos
will now close out the tournament on
Sunday when they travel to
Saddleback College for an 11:00 a.m.
contest.
It didn't take
long for Cerritos to hit the gaps,
as they sent 13 batters to the plate
in the bottom of the first inning
and scored eight times on eight
hits. Six more runs crossed the
plate in the second inning, while
the score was 17-1 after three
innings. It was a hit parade for the
Falcons, as six straight batters
collected hits in the first inning,
while the team also took advantage
of seven walks by Rams pitchers,
while Victor Valley also committed
six errors.
Every starter had
at least two hits in the win, with
sophomore infielder
Jose Serrano (Artesia
HS) and sophomore catcher
Phil Rodriguez (Norwalk
HS) each collecting three hits.
As for Rodriguez, he came within a
home run of hitting for the cycle,
while he drove in four runs, while
Serrano reached base four times and
scored three runs. Sophomore
outfielder
Andrew Baslow (Chatsworth
HS) had a pair of two-run
doubles, while sophomore outfielder
Jake Moore (Palisade,
CO HS) had an RBI double and
triple, while he also drove in a run
on a fielder's choice.
The recipient of
the explosive offense was sophomore
right-hander
Robbie Dominguez (El
Rancho HS), who picked up his
second with of the season by
pitching seven innings and allowed
one run on three hits and struck out
nine. Of the 25 batters Dominguez
faced, only four balls were hit out
of the infield.
