Generally accustomed
to the spacious confines of Kincaid
Field, the Cerritos College baseball
team fell victim to the small
ballpark at Santa Ana College,
allowing two big home runs, and
suffered a 9-1 non-conference loss
on Tuesday. The setback dropped the
Falcons to 8-2 on the year, while
the Dons improved to 5-5. Cerritos
will get another shot at an Orange
Empire Conference team on Wednesday,
but the Falcons will be playing host
to Golden West College at 2:00 p.m.
on Wednesday.
The Dons took quick advantage of the
small field, as Nick Tanos drilled a
two-run home run in the bottom of
the first inning off freshman
John Ortega (Downey HS)
after an error by sophomore catcher
Phil Rodriguez (Norwalk
HS) on a dropped third strike
allowed the lead-off batter to reach
base. After picking up solo runs in
the third and fourth innings, the
Falcons scored their lone run to
make the score, 4-1. But it wasn't
enough, as Santa Ana's Crispin
Tarango put the game out of reach
with a grand slam off freshman
Erick Campos (Norwalk HS),
who came on in relief of Ortega in
the fifth inning.
Even though they only scored one
run, the Falcons had several chances
to score, but missed out on their
opportunities. In the top of the
first inning with runners on first
and second with two outs, Rodriguez
grounded out to end the inning.
Then, in the fourth inning,
Rodriguez singled with two outs,
followed by a walk to freshman
shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los Altos HS).
After freshman third baseman
Miguel Flores (St. John
Bosco HS) singled to load the
bases, sophomore outfielder
Jake Moore (Palisade, CO
HS) grounded out to end the
inning. The team also had runners at
first and third with nobody out in
the eighth, but the next three
batters were retired to end the
threat
On
the day, sophomore outfielder
Nick Armstrong (Marina HS)
went 3-for-5 and scored the team's
lone run, as he came home on a balk.
Rodriguez had two hits, as the
Falcons were limited to just eight
hits on the day.
