The
Cerritos College baseball
team continued their run
through the Orange Empire
Conference at Kincaid Field
with a 3-2 win over Irvine
Valley College on Thursday
afternoon. The Falcons (10-2
overall) are now 2-1 in
games against teams from the
OEC this week and will close
out their week by hosting
Fullerton College on
Saturday at 12:00 p.m. After
falling behind 2-1 to the
Lasers (5-7), Cerritos
scored single runs in the
seventh and eighth innings
to pull out the win. The
one-run win was the fourth
of the season for the
Falcons.
Irvine
Valley went up 2-1 with a
run in the top of the
seventh inning after a walk
and wild pitch preceded a
throwing error by freshman
shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los
Altos HS), which scored
Jonathan Saldana. The ground
ball by Justin Bono was
fielded cleanly by Pena, but
his throw pulled
Trever Blood (La
Mirada HS) off the bag,
which allowed Saldana to
score. The Falcons came
right back in the bottom of
the seventh inning with
freshman outfielder
Jorge Torres (Schurr
HS) leading off with a
base hit. After he was
sacrificed to second base by
freshman designated hitter
Guillermo Garcia
(Artesia HS),
sophomore infielder
Jose Serrano (Artesia
HS) singled into
right-center field to drive
home Torres with the tying
run.
Freshman
closer
Miguel Flores (St.
John Bosco HS) came in
in the eighth inning in
relief of sophomore starter
Robbie Dominguez
(El Rancho HS), who
had another solid outing end
up in a no decision. In his
seven innings, Dominguez
limited the Lasers to five
hits and struck out five.
Flores earned his third win
of the year with two
dominating innings, as he
struck out four, including
the last two batters.
In the
bottom of the eighth inning,
Blood led off the a base hit
off Robert Purpura, who came
on after Kurt Olsen pitched
the first seven innings.
Pena followed with a walk
before sophomore catcher
Phil Rodriguez
(Norwalk HS)
sacrificed both of the
runners. Flores was
intentionally walked to load
the bases. But Purpura then
unleashed a wild pitch,
which scored Blood with the
eventual game-winning run.
