The
Cerritos College
baseball team
finished a
successful
pre-season run
through the Orange
Empire Conference
with a 5-2 win at
Golden West College
on Tuesday
afternoon. With the
win, the Falcons are
now 11-3 on the
season, after going
3-2 against the
nearby conference,
which included a
suspended game
against Saddleback
College with
Cerritos leading,
3-0 in the sixth
inning. The Falcons
will now host
Chaffey College on
Wednesday at 2:00
p.m. in their second
meeting of the
season. In their
first game, the
Panthers won an 8-6
game that was halted
after eight innings
when dark clouds and
wind turned to rain.
After jumping out to
a 2-0 lead with
single runs in the
second and third
inning, the Rustlers
tied the game with
two runs in the
bottom of the fifth
inning off sophomore
starting pitcher
Robbie Dominguez
(El Rancho HS).
But the Falcon
offense responded
with three runs in
the seventh inning
to put the game out
of reach against
Dominguez and
freshman closer
Miguel Flores
(St. John Bosco
HS), who earned
his fourth save on
the year. With one
out, sophomore
outfielder
Nick Armstrong
(Marina HS)
reached base on an
error by Golden West
third baseman Josh
Potter. After
Armstrong stole
second base,
sophomore infielder
Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS)
drew a walk. A wild
pitch advanced the
runners before
sophomore outfielder
Andrew Baslow
(Chatsworth HS)
singled in the
eventual
game-winning run.
After a pitching
change, both
freshman first
baseman
Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS)
and freshman
shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS)
produced run-scoring
singles.
Dominguez ran
his record on the
year to 3-0 after
pitching 6 2/3
innings and allowed
just three hits and
two runs. He was
able to work out of
a jam in the first
and fourth innings,
while his defense
played well behind
him despite two
errors. Flores came
on with a runner at
first base and two
outs in the seventh
inning and after
surrendering a base
hit to the first
batter, retired the
next nine he faced.
On the day,
Baslow went 3-for-5
with two RBI, a
double and a stolen
base, while Pena
also collected three
hits, which included
a triple in the
second innings and a
walk.
