02.24.07 -TEAM SEES 5-0 LEAD SLIP AWAY IN 7-5 LOSS TO FULLERTON
Through the first
month of the season,
when the Cerritos
College baseball
team was staked to a
5-0 lead, it
generally meant
"lights out" for
their opponent. But
when the Falcons
(12-4) saw their 5-0
lead heading into
the bottom of the
fifth inning against
Fullerton College on
Saturday turn into a
7-5 loss, it left
the players and
coaching staff
scratching their
heads. Not only did
Cerritos have their
closer, freshman
Miguel Flores
(St. John Bosco
HS) on the
mound, he had not
allowed an earned
run and only five
hits through 15
innings on the year.
But three
consecutive
uncharacteristic
walks allowed and a
bases loaded double
allowed the Hornets
(12-4) to score
enough runs to pull
out the victory. The
Falcons will now
start South Coast
Conference season
when they travel to
Griffith Park on
Tuesday for a 2:00
p.m. game against
Los Angeles City
College.
In
their five-run fifth
inning, freshman
outfielder
Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS)
led off with a walk
and advanced to
second base on an
error off a ball hit
by sophomore
outfielder
Nick Armstrong
(Marina HS).
Sophomore infielder
Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS)
and sophomore
outfielder
Andrew Baslow
(Chatsworth HS)
followed with
run-scoring singles
before freshman
first baseman
Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS)
drove in two with a
triple. Freshman
shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los
Altos HS) closed
out the scoring for
the Falcons with a
sacrifice fly.
Freshman
pitcher
John Ortega
(Downey HS)
and sophomore
pitcher
Robbie Dominguez
(El Rancho HS)
pitched the first
four innings and
combined to record
six strikeouts,
while allowing just
four hits. The
Hornets then scored
their seven runs on
seven hits against
the next three
Falcon pitchers.
