For the first three games
of the season, the Cerritos College baseball
team relied on their solid pitching and timely
hitting to jump out to a 3-0 start to the
season. In their non-conference game at Chaffey
College on Tuesday, the Falcons were able to get
hits when they needed them, but saw their
pitching fail them. In an abbreviated
eight-inning game due to darkness and weather
conditions, the Cerritos pitchers allowed 12
walks, which resulted in four Panther runs. On
the day, Cerritos sent out eight different
pitchers, with seven of them allowing at least
one walk.
The Falcons will look to rebound when they travel to take on
San Diego Mesa College twice on Friday and then
play Palomar College on Saturday.
After falling behind, 4-0
after two innings, Cerritos came back to score
three in the top of the third inning, with
Chaffey responding with two of their own in the
bottom of the stanza. It was a 6-6 game before
the Panthers scored twice in the bottom of the
sixth, which turned out to be the difference in
the game.
In the third inning, the
Falcons started the inning with freshman second
baseman
Guillermo Garcia (Artesia HS)
reaching base on an error, followed by a base
hit from sophomore outfielder
Nick Armstrong (Marina HS), which sent
Garcia to third base. A passed ball allowed
Garcia to score, while Armstrong stole second
base and came home on a single by freshman first
baseman
Trever
Blood (La Mirada HS). After a
swipe of second base by Blood, he came home on a
run-scoring single by freshman shortstop
Jerry
Pena (Los Altos HS).
Armstrong and sophomore third
baseman
Jose
Serrano (Artesia HS) each had
consecutive RBI hits in the fourth inning, while
sophomore catcher
Phil Rodriguez (Norwalk HS) tied
the game at 6-6 with an RBI single in the fifth,
scoring Blood, who walked and stole second base.
On the day, Blood went 3-for-3 with a walk and
RBI, while Armstrong and Rodriguez each had two
hits.
Sophomore
David
Gurbach (Aliso Niguel HS) started
his first game of his career and lasted just 1
1/3 innings after allowing four runs (three
earned) before the cavalcade of Falcon pitchers
came on to keep the team in the game.
