The
start of the South
Coast Conference
season resulted in a
13-4 win at Griffith
Park against Los
Angeles City
College, in a game
that was rained out
on Tuesday. The win
by the Falcons gives
them a 13-4 overall
record, while they
are 1-0 in
conference action.
The team will now
host Pasadena City
College on Saturday
in a 12:00 p.m.
game.
In the win over the Cubs, the Falcons were down 4-3 before
scoring four times
in the sixth inning
and adding two in
the eighth and four
more in the ninth
inning. Freshman
pitcher
John Ortega
(Downey HS)
surrendered a
three-run home run
in the fourth
inning, but limited
LA City to just four
other hits on the
day while he struck
out eight to run his
season record to
3-1.
In the four-run sixth inning, freshman designated hitter
Guillermo Garcia
(Artesia HS)
led off with a base
hit and eventually
came home on a base
hit by freshman
outfielder
Jorge Torres
(Schurr HS),
with Cubs third
baseman Milton
Jefferson throwing
the ball away, which
allowed Garcia to
score. After a
single and stolen
base by sophomore
outfielder
Nick Armstrong
(Marina HS)
put runners on
second and third,
sophomore infielder
Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS)
singled them home
and eventually came
home on a fielder's
choice by sophomore
catcher
Phil Rodriguez
(Norwalk HS).
The Falcons took advantage of 10 walks and four hit by
pitches on the day
to aid their cause,
as freshman
outfielder
Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS)
and Torres each
collected RBIs
without the benefit
of a hit in the
eighth, while Garcia
had a two-run single
in the ninth inning.
Rodriguez and
freshman third
baseman
Miguel Flores
(St. John Bosco
HS), who pitched
the ninth inning,
also had RBI singles
in the inning.
On the day, freshman shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los
Altos HS) was
3-for-6 with two
runs scored, while
Armstrong, Serrano,
Rodriguez and Garcia
each had two hits.
