The
Cerritos College
baseball team got
hits in bunches,
while sophomore
pitcher
Robbie Dominguez
(El Rancho HS)
struck out 11
batters in seven
innings, as the
Falcons registered
an 8-1 South Coast
Conference victory
over Pasadena City
College at Kincaid
Field on Saturday
afternoon. With the
win, the Falcons are
now 14-4 on the
season and 2-0 in
conference action,
while the Lancers
fell to 3-16 overall
and 0-3 in the SCC.
Cerritos will now
travel to Mt. San
Antonio College on
Tuesday for a rare
6:00 p.m. game.
A five-run third inning gave Dominguez a comfortable lead,
while they tacked on
two more runs in the
fifth and a solo run
in the seventh
inning. In the
third, freshman
outfielder
Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS)
led off with a walk
off starting pitcher
Noe Aranda and moved
to second base on a
sacrifice bunt by
freshman outfielder
Jorge Torres
(Schurr HS).
A single by
sophomore outfielder
Nick Armstrong
(Marina HS)
put runners at first
and third, which set
up a run-scoring
single by sophomore
second baseman
Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS).
After a
double-steal,
freshman shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los
Altos HS) gave
the Falcons a 3-0
lead with a two-run
single.
Pena then stole second base (the Falcons had four stolen
bases in the inning)
before freshman
first baseman
Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS)
singled to right
field. But the ball
went through the
legs of right
fielder Sheehan
Casey, which allowed
Pena to score and
sent Blood to third
base. Sophomore
catcher
Phil Rodriguez
(Norwalk HS)
followed with an RBI
single.
Dominguez (4-0) was in complete command of his pitches, and
aside from a shaky
sixth inning,
limited the Lancers
to just two singles
and he struck out 11
on the day. Lancer
first baseman Lee
Pope had both hits
off Dominguez and
walked once, but the
two batters behind
him in the lineup,
Joel Calderon and
Evan Bloem, went a
combined 0-for-6
with five
strikeouts. In his
seven innings, every
out that was
recorded by
Dominguez was either
a strikeout or a
ground ball. After
he allowed
back-to-back walks
in the sixth inning
with one out,
Dominguez recorded a
strikeout and ground
out. Sophomores
David Gurbach
(Aliso Niguel HS)
and
Lalo Ceniceros
(El Rancho HS)
pitched the final
two innings.
The Falcons received a lot off offensive support from the
middle of their
lineup, as Serrano
(2-for-5, RBI), Pena
(2-for-4, 2 RBI),
Blood (2-for-4, two
runs) and Rodriguez
(3-for-3, RBI)
accounted for nine
of the team's 12
hits.
