The
Cerritos College
baseball team
overcame an 8-7
deficit by scoring
two runs in each of
the eighth and ninth
innings to record an
11-8 South Coast
Conference win
Tuesday night at Mt.
San Antonio College.
The win by the
Falcons improves
their season record
to 15-4, while they
are now 3-0 in
conference action.
The team will now
travel to Compton
College on Thursday
afternoon for a 2:00
p.m. conference
game.
Down 8-7 heading into the top of the eighth inning, freshmen
Miguel Flores
(St. John Bosco
HS) and
Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS)
led off with
back-to-back walks.
After a Mountie
pitching change,
freshman
Guillermo Garcia
(Artesia HS)
drew a walk to load
the bases. Sophomore
Nick Armstrong
(Marina HS)
tied the game when
he was hit by a
pitch, which forced
in a run. Sophomore
Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS)
followed with a
sacrifice fly to
give the Falcons a
9-8 lead. Cerritos
added two insurance
runs in the ninth
inning to make
Flores, who pitched
the last two
innings, the winning
pitcher.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Kevin Camacho
(Santa Fe HS)
struggled in his 4
1/3 innings,
allowing five runs
(three earned) and
eight hits, although
he did strike out
seven batters. The
Falcons took a 2-0
lead in the top of
the first inning,
but Mt. SAC scored
three times in the
bottom of the
stanza. Cerritos
came back with two
more runs in the
second inning, but
again, the Mounties
fought back and
regained the lead
(5-4) with a pair of
runs in the third
inning.
In the ninth inning, Flores drew a one-out walk and moved to
second base on a
base hit by Topete.
After the second out
was recorded,
Armstrong singled
home one run, while
a wild pitch allowed
Topete to score the
second run of the
inning. On the
night, Topete was
2-for-4 at the plate
and scored three
runs.
Armstrong drove in three runs from his lead-off spot in the
batting order, as
did Serrano, who was
3-for-5 with three
RBI. Sophomore
outfielder
Andrew Baslow
(Chatsworth HS)
returned to the
lineup after an
injury and went
3-for-5 with two
RBI, while Flores
scored three times.
On the night,
Cerritos clubbed 13
hits and drew six
walks.
