Freshman pitcher
John Ortega
(Downey HS)
had a perfect game
going through 6 1/3
innings against East
Los Angeles College
at Kincaid Field on
Tuesday afternoon.
He then allowed a
single to
right-center field,
but it was the only
batter to reach base
in his eight innings
of work, as the
Cerritos College
baseball team posted
a critical 6-0 win
over the Huskies in
a South Coast
Conference game. The
win improves the
Falcons to 18-4 on
the season, while
they remain on top
of the conference
with a 6-0 record.
The loss dropped
East LA to 17-6 on
the season and 3-3
in the SCC. Cerritos
will now host
cross-town rival
Long Beach City
College at 2:30 p.m.
on Thursday.
For the second game in a row, Ortega was dominant, as he
allowed Compton
College just six
hits and struck out
14 batters in seven
innings of a 9-0
victory last week.
Against the Huskies,
he struck out seven
and pitched to just
one batter over the
minimum. Sophomore
Kevin Camacho
(Santa Fe HS)
pitched the ninth
inning and set East
LA down in order.
The combined
one-hitter was the
19th in school
history.
Offensively, the Falcons took full advantage of the 11 walks
issued by four
Huskie pitchers, as
all six runs were
from runners who
drew a base on
balls. In the second
inning, sophomore
catcher
Phil Rodriguez
(Norwalk HS)
drew his first of
four walks on the
day, and after
getting sacrificed
to second base, came
home on a base hit
by freshman
outfielder
Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS).
Cerritos pitched up two more runs in the fifth and sixth
innings on just two
hits, with sophomore
second baseman
Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS)
driving home two in
the sixth with a
base hit. He drove
in Topete and
freshman designated
hitter
Guillermo Garcia
(Artesia HS),
who each walked. The
Falcons loaded the
bases in the seventh
inning after
Rodriguez walked,
followed by a double
from freshman third
baseman
Miguel Flores
(St. John Bosco
HS) and a walk
to sophomore
outfielder
David Gurbach
(Aliso Niguel HS).
Topete picked up his
second RBI of the
game on a ground out
to finish off the
scoring.
