The Cerritos
College baseball
team jumped out
to a 10-0 lead
against Los
Angeles City
College at
Kincaid Field on
Tuesday
afternoon and
finished with a
12-5 South Coast
Conference
victory. With
the win, the
Falcons, ranked
#1 in Southern
California, are
now 20-4 on the
season and held
their lead in
the conference
with an 8-0
record. The two
teams will meet
up on Thursday
at 2:30 p.m. at
Griffith Park.
Sophomore
pitcher
Kevin Camacho
(Santa Fe HS),
who allowed just
two hits through
the first six
innings, found
himself in
trouble in the
top of the
seventh, after
he loaded the
bases to start
the inning.
After a
fielder's choice
and a strikeout
got the first
two outs, the
Cubs followed
with a
run-scoring
single, a bases
loaded triple
and another
run-scoring
single to
account for all
five of their
runs. Camacho
(4-0) did strike
out nine in his
seven innings,
while sophomore
Lalo Ceniceros
(El Rancho
HS) pitched
the final two
innings and set
down all six
batters.
The Falcons
scored seven
runs in the
bottom of the
third inning to
put the game out
of reach early,
and added
several
insurance runs
in the latter
part of the
game. After
sophomore
catcher
Phil Rodriguez
(Norwalk HS)
opened the
scoring with his
fourth home run
with two outs in
the bottom of
the second
inning, the
flood gates
opened in the
next stanza.
With one out,
sophomore
outfielder
Nick Armstrong
(Marina HS)
and sophomore
second baseman
Jose Serrano
(Artesia HS)
each singled.
After the second
out of the
inning was
recorded,
freshman
shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos
HS) tripled
in both runs and
then came home
on a single by
Rodriguez.
Freshman first
baseman
Trever Blood
(La Mirada
HS), who
was hit by a
pitch before the
Rodriguez base
hit, came home
on a single by
freshman third
baseman
Miguel Flores
(St. John
Bosco HS).
An error allowed
Flores to move
to third base,
which set up an
RBI single from
freshman
outfielder
Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS),
while another
error allowed
Topete to score
on a ball throw
away by Cubs
reliever Nathan
Metroka.
Defensive
miscues
continued for LA
City, as they
finished with
five errors and
three passed
balls, and also
led to the final
three Cerritos
runs. Topete did
collect his
second RBI
single in the
fifth inning,
which scored
Blood, who led
off the inning
with a double.
On the day,
Armstrong
(3-for-4, three
runs) and
Serrano
(3-for-5, two
runs) led the
Falcons, while
Rodriguez,
Flores and
Topete all had
two hits.
