Cerritos
College
freshman
shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los
Altos HS)
became the
fifth player
in school
history to
hit for the
cycle, as he
recorded an
infield
single in
the top of
the ninth
inning to
complete the
feat, in an
11-3 South
Coast
Conference
win over Los
Angeles City
College at
Griffith
Park on
Thursday. With
the win, the
Falcons,
ranked #1 in
Southern
California,
are 21-4
overall and
sit atop the
conference
standings
with a 9-0
record.
Three big
games are in
store for
Cerritos, as
they host
Los Angeles
Harbor
College on
Saturday at
noon, and
then travel
to
Wilmington
to face the
Seahawks
with two
games on the
line. First
two teams
will
conclude
their
suspended
game from
March 1 at
1:30
(Cerritos is
leading,
11-10 in the
bottom of
the eighth
inning) and
then they
will play
their
regularly
scheduled
game at 2:30
p.m. The
21-4 start
is the
team's best
since they
got off to a
21-3 start
back in
1990.
In
addition to
Pena's
cycle, which
is the first
since
Ryan
Andrews
hit for the
cycle
against East
Los Angeles
College in
2002, the
Falcons also
received
four hits
from
freshman
first
baseman
Trever Blood
(La
Mirada HS)while
freshman
designated
hitter
Guillermo
Garcia
(Artesia
HS) had
three hits
and drove in
four runs.
Pena and
Blood each
drove in
two, while
they both
hit their
first home
runs of the
season.
The
Falcons
picked up a
quick three
runs in the
top of the
first
inning, as
sophomore
second
baseman
Jose Serrano
(Artesia
HS)
walked with
one out and
came home on
a triple by
Pena. After
an out was
recorded,
Blood
clubbed a
two-run home
run, giving
the Falcons
a 3-0 lead.
After Garcia
drove in a
run in the
top of the
second
inning,
Cerritos
picked up
three more
runs in the
third
inning,
thanks in
part to
three
straight
walks. After
Pena doubled
with one
out, an
error
brought him
home. Blood
hit into a
fielder's
choice,
followed by
a base hit
from
sophomore
outfielder
Andrew
Baslow
(Chatsworth
HS) and
a walk to
freshman
third
baseman
Miguel
Flores
(St.
John Bosco
HS)
loaded the
bases.
Freshman
outfielder
Anthony
Topete
(Norwalk
HS) and
Garcia each
picked un an
RBI after
drawing
walks.
Sophomore
pitcher
Robbie
Dominguez
(El
Rancho HS)
improved his
record to
7-0 on the
year after
pitching
seven
innings, and
allowed
seven hits,
two runs
(one
earned),
while he
struck out
five.
Sophomore
Ryan Chiazza
(California
HS) and
Flores each
pitched an
inning after
Dominguez
left the
game.
Pena
gave the
Falcons an
8-1 lead
with a solo
home run in
the sixth
inning and
drew a walk
to lead off
the eighth
inning. He
got his
chance to
complete the
cycle in the
ninth, and
singled on a
1-0 pitch.
Garcia drove
in two runs
with a base
hit in the
eighth
before
Topete
picked up
his second
RBI of the
game on
another
bases loaded
walk. On the
day,
Cerritos
drew 11
walks.
