Although it's widely
referred to as the "hot
corner", third base has been
a revolving door this season
for the Cerritos College
baseball team. But the
Falcons (19-12 overall, 10-2
SCC) may be ready to settle
on freshman
Jared
Olsen (Sonora
HS) if he continues to
play the way he did in the
team's 2-1 South Coast
Conference win at Kincaid
Field on Tuesday afternoon.
In addition to his two base
hits, Olsen made a huge play
in the top of the ninth
inning with the Seahawks
(10-20, 5-7)threatening to
tie the game, or even take
the lead. The win kept
Cerritos in first place, as
they prepare for a two-game
series with Long Beach City
College on Thursday at 2:30
p.m., which will be played
at Cerritos.
The game will also be
broadcast on the internet at
www.klbc.org.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Miguel Flores
(St. John Bosco HS)
was cruising along with a
seven-hitter heading into
the ninth inning, and
surrendered just one run,
while striking out 11
batters. He gave up a
lead-off single to Gerald
Washington and then hit Juan
Favela with a pitch. Flores
was replaced by freshman
Jay Heirigs
(Rocklin HS), who
promptly hit Matt Hibbert to
load the bases with no outs.
Joey Guillen followed with a
hot shot at Olsen, who
stabbed the ball out of the
air, and after checking to
see that he actually had the
ball the ball, threw to
freshman second baseman
Brandon Pesante
(La Mirada HS), to
cut down pinch-runner Miguel
Mena for a double play.
Freshman
Steve
Blanchette (Schurr
HS) came on to strike
out pinch-hitter Eduardo
Camarena for the third out
of the inning and picked up
his first save on the year.
Trailing 1-0 heading into
the bottom of the sixth
inning, the Falcons had
started to heat up their
bats, as they collected two
consecutive hits in the
fifth with two outs, but
Olsen was thrown out at
third base after a single to
right field by sophomore
Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS)
appeared to keep the inning
alive.
Freshman outfielder
Brian Gaylord (La
Mirada HS) started the
sixth with a base hit to
right field, as did
sophomore shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los
Altos HS). Looking to
sacrifice the runners over
with a bunt, sophomore
outfielder
Trever
Blood (La
Mirada HS) pulled the
bat back and slapped a ball
into a hole in the infield
for a base hit. After a
pitching change, freshman
first baseman
George
Sanchez (Gahr
HS) tied the game with
a ground out, while freshman
catcher
AJ Rodriguez
(Gahr HS) drove in
the eventual game-winning
run with a double.
On the day, Cerritos had 12
hits, with Topete leading
the way with three, while
Olsen and Blood each adding
two.
