After the first four
innings of their
South Coast
Conference game at
Long Beach City
College on Saturday
afternoon, the
Cerritos College
baseball team was
sitting pretty with
a 7-0 lead. But the
Falcons got only two
hits the rest of the
game and had to hold
off a late rally by
the Vikings to
preserve a 7-6
victory. The win
moves Cerritos to
20-13 on the season,
while they remain in
first place in the
SCC with an
11-3 record. As for
the Vikings, they
dropped to 22-11
overall and 9-5 in
conference play. The
Falcons will now
begin a
home-and-home series
with last place Los
Angeles City College
(6-23, 2-12) and
will host the Cubs
at 2:30 p.m. on
Tuesday.
A five-run third
inning that started
with two outs, gave
the Falcons their
early lead. With
runners at first and
second base,
sophomore shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS)
singled home
freshman outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS),
followed by an RBI
base hit by freshman
first baseman
George Sanchez
(Gahr
HS). That set
the table for
sophomore outfielder
Trever
Blood (La
Mirada HS), who
blasted a three-run
home run off
starting pitcher
Scott Watson for the
5-0 Cerritos lead.
Getting his first
start of the season,
freshman
Jay
Heirigs
(Rocklin HS)
and lasted three
batters into the
sixth inning, while
allowed two runs and
six hits. He ended
up earning the win,
to improve to 3-0 on
the season after 17
appearances out of
the bullpen. It was
the bullpen that
struggled and helped
the Vikings get back
in the game.
Freshman
Steve
Blanchette
(Schurr
HS) allowed
three runs in a
little over an
inning, before
freshman
John Garcia
(El Rancho HS)
finished off the
seventh inning and
faced one batter in
the eighth.
Sophomore
Miguel Flores
(St.
John
Bosco HS), came
on in the eighth
inning and went the
rest of the way to
pick up his third
save. He struck out
two in the eighth
inning and held off
Long Beach in the
ninth. After
allowing two singles
and wild pitch to
start the inning,
Flores struck out
the next two batters
before a throwing
error allowed the
sixth run of the
game to cross the
plate. He finished
off the game on a
come-backer to post
the save.
Prior to the Vikings
coming back to make
the game close,
Cerritos was holding
a 7-0 lead when
sophomore outfielder
Anthony
Topete
(Norwalk HS)
singled home two
runs with a base
hit.
