Freshman second
baseman
Brandon Pesante
(La Mirada
HS) singled
home sophomore
first baseman
Trever Blood
(La Mirada
HS) from
second base with
one out in the
bottom of the
ninth with the
game-winning run
in a 2-1
Cerritos College
South Coast
Conference
baseball win
over Pasadena
City College at
Kincaid Field on
Tuesday
afternoon. Blood
reached base on
a fielding error
by Lancer second
baseman Steve
Hansen and
advanced to
second base on a
sacrifice bunt
by freshman
catcher
Mario Romero
(Los Altos
HS).
Pesante then
dropped a looper
inside the
left-field line
for the winning
run. Hansen had
trouble with the
ball hit by
Blood, as it had
a great deal of
backspin on it
and he wasn't
able to handle
the ball
cleanly.
With the
victory, the
first place
Falcons improved
to 12-3 in the
SCC and 21-13
overall, while
the Lancers fell
to 4-28 on the
year and 4-9 in
conference play.
The two teams
meet up again on
Thursday in a
2:30 p.m. game
at Jackie
Robinson Field
in Pasadena.
Trailing 1-0
heading into the
bottom of the
seventh inning,
Cerritos took
advantage of
another Lancer
error to score
their first run.
With one out,
freshman
designated
hitter
George Sanchez
(Gahr HS)
hit a ground
ball to PCC
shortstop Justin
Zialcita, whose
throw went over
the head of
first baseman
Lee Pope. After
the second out
was recorded,
freshman catcher
AJ Rodriguez
(Gahr HS)
singled to left
field, scoring
Sanchez.
Rodriguez was
removed for
Romero, who was
the pinch-runner
and stayed in
the game as the
catcher.
The pitcher's
dual between
sophomore
Miguel Flores
(St. John
Bosco) and
Lancer hurler
Michael Frasina
appeared to be
heading into
extra innings,
as both were
tossing
excellent games.
Frasina (4-3)
had the Falcons
guessing the
entire game and
only allowed
five hits and
two walks, while
he struck out
three in the
loss. As for
Flores (5-2), he
surrendered two
of his three
hits in the
second inning
when the Lancers
scored their
lone run, while
he struck out 11
and walked
three. In the
second inning,
Adrian Martinez
led off with a
base hit and
after Kevin
Dultz sacrificed
him to second
base, Roderick
Martinez doubled
him home. After
walking the
lead-off batter
in the fourth
inning, Flores
set down 18 of
the final 19
batters he
faced.
