After the first
two innings of
their South
Coast Conference
baseball game on
Saturday
afternoon at
Kincaid Field,
it appeared as
though Cerritos
College would be
running up the
score against
Los Angeles City
College. The
Falcons held an
early 5-0 lead,
but the offense
sputtered after
that and settled
for a 6-2 win.
The victory kept
Cerritos two
games up in
first place in
the SCC with a
14-3 record,
while they
improved to
23-13 overall.
As for the Cubs,
they dropped to
7-24 overall and
2-13 in
conference play.
The two are
scheduled to
play a 2:30 p.m.
game on Tuesday
at Pote Field in
Griffith Park.
In the
bottom of the
first inning,
Cerritos took
advantage of two
walks and a
throwing error
by LA City
pitcher Matthew
Gonzalez to post
four runs on the
board. Sophomore
outfielder
Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS)
led off with a
walk, before
freshman
outfielder
Brian Gaylord
(La Mirada HS)
pulled back on
his bunt attempt
and slapped a
base hit up the
middle.
Sophomore
shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS)
then bunted back
to Gonzalez, who
mishandled the
ball, loading
the bases.
Freshman first
baseman
George Sanchez
(Gahr HS)
walked to bring
home a run,
while sophomore
outfielder
Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS)
drove in the
second run with
a sacrifice fly.
Before the
stanza was
complete, both
freshman
designated
hitter
AJ Rodriguez
(Gahr HS)
and freshman
second baseman
Brandon Pesante
(La Mirada HS)
each added
run-scoring
singles.
Freshman
starting pitcher
Tony Peraza
(La Mirada HS),
who stranded a
runner at third
base in the top
of the first
inning, struck
out seven
batters and
allowed just one
hit in his four
innings of work.
He retired the
final eight
batters he
faced, with five
of those by
punch-outs and
earned the win.
It was more
of the same in
the second
inning, with
freshman third
baseman
Jared Olsen
(Sonora HS)
leading off with
a base hit, with
Topete colleting
a base hit and
Gaylord getting
hit by a pitch.
Sanchez drove in
the lone run of
the inning with
a sacrifice fly,
which gave the
Falcons a 5-0
advantage. After
the Topete
single, Cerritos
was only able to
collect two base
hits until their
final run of the
game in the
eighth inning.
With Pesante on
third base,
Olsen dropped
down a perfect
bunt on a
suicide squeeze
play.
Probably the
only thing more
exciting than
the perfectly
executed squeeze
bunt was the
triple play the
Falcons pulled
off in the
seventh inning.
Leading 5-1, the
Falcons saw the
Cubs get runners
on first and
second base with
no outs against
freshman relief
pitcher
Steve Blanchette
(Schurr HS).
But, when Jose
Romo hit a line
drive at Sanchez
for the first
out, he wisely
stepped on first
and then threw
to second base,
allowing
Blanchette to
escape out of
the inning.
