Playing as if it was their day
off, the Cerritos College
baseball team waited until the
fourth inning to finally get a
run on the board in their South
Coast Conference game against
Los Angeles City College on
Wednesday. After their regularly
scheduled game was postponed a
day, the game was moved to
Kincaid Field, where the Falcons
finally started to run on all
cylinders, as they scored in the
final six innings of the game
for a 7-2 victory. The win kept
Cerritos (24-13 overall, 15-3
SCC) in first place, as
they enjoy a two-game bye. The
team will resume action next
Tuesday when they travel to
Compton College.
Sophomore starting pitcher
Miguel Flores (St.
John
Bosco HS) made just
one mistake in the game, and
Isaac Alonzo of LA City made him
pay, as he clubbed a two-run
home run in the bottom of the
second inning for a 2-0 Cubs
lead. But Flores (6-2) limited
LA City to just three hits after
that until he was relieved in
the seventh inning with runners
on first and second base with no
outs. Sophomore
John Ortega (Downey
HS) came on and got the
Falcons out of the jam, as he
set down nine of the 10 batters
to earn his first save of the
season. In his three innings of
work, Ortega struck out six
batters, while Flores set down
five more by strikeout.
The team finally got on the
board in the fourth inning after
sophomore outfielder
Anthony
Topete (Norwalk
HS) walked to lead off the
inning, After freshman
outfielder
Brian Gaylord (La
Mirada HS) doubled,
Topete came home on a
sacrifice fly by sophomore
shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los
Altos HS). Cerritos tied
the game in the next inning when
Topete drove in freshman
second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La
Mirada HS) from third in a
fielder's choice.
It was a 3-2 Falcon lead in the
following inning when Pena
opened with a double and
eventually came home on a base
hit down the left-field line by
freshman catcher
AJ Rodriguez
(Gahr
HS). Cerritos added two
more in the seventh inning when
sophomore outfielder
Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS) drove in
two with a bases loaded single,
while
Topete picked up his
second RBI of the day in the
eighth, as he singled home
freshman designated hitter
Pat Radford (Long
Beach Millikan HS), who was
hit by a pitch. Rodriguez closed
out the scoring in the top of
the ninth inning, as he doubled
home freshman first baseman
George Sanchez (Gahr
HS), who led off the inning
with a base hit.
