Sophomore first baseman Trever Blood (La
Mirada HS) went 3-for-5 with two RBI to lead the
Cerritos College baseball team to a 6-4 non-conference
win at San Diego Mesa College on Friday. Blood drove in
the game’s first run with a double in the first inning
and then clubbed a solo home run in the top of the ninth
inning for an insurance run. With the win, the Falcons
are now 3-1 on the season, while the Olympians fell to
1-1. The team will now host Santa Ana College at 12:00
p.m. on Saturday.
Cerritos
scored twice in the first inning and then took a 5-1
lead in the fourth inning, thanks to three SD Mesa
errors in the stanza. The big blow was a two-run
single by sophomore shortstop Jerry Pena (Los
Altos HS).
Freshman
pitcher George Sanchez (Gahr HS)
earned his first win of the season after pitching
six innings and allowed two runs on four hits, along
with three walks. He did strike out eight batters,
including four of the last five batters he faced.
Freshman Tony Peraza (La Mirada HS)
came on in relief of freshman Steve Blanchette
(Schurr HS) in the eighth inning and
registered his first save of the year. He shut down
the Olympians in the eighth inning after they got to
within 5-3 by getting a double play with runners at
first and third.
In addition
to the three hits from Blood, Cerritos also received
three RBI from Pena, who drove in the team’s second
run in the top of the first inning. Freshman catcher
AJ Rodriguez (Gahr HS) had two hits on
the day. |
