Taking advantage of three throwing errors by
Saddleback College, the Cerritos College baseball team
scored four unearned runs to help them along in their
7-1 non-conference win at Kincaid Field on Saturday
afternoon. The victory improved the Falcons record to
7-2, while the Gauchos dropped to 7-3. Cerritos will
close out their six-game homestand and fourth game in as
many days when they host Glendale College at 1:00 p.m.
on Sunday.
Although
errors led to the first two runs by the Falcons, it
was a throwing error by Saddleback relief pitcher
Ryan Aguera that propelled a four-run seventh
inning. After both Anthony Topete (Norwalk
HS) and Jerry Pena (Los Altos HS)
singled with one out, first baseman Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS) hit a slow roller to Aguera
along the third base side. Looking to go to third
base for a force out, his throw was wild past
Brandon Loftus, allowing both runners to score and
Blood moving to second base. After a pair of walks,
Zac Johnson came on to pitch and surrendered a
two-run single to pinch-hitter Brian Gaylord
(La Mirada HS), giving Cerritos a 6-1 lead.
Saddleback
had several chances to get to Falcon starting
pitcher Miguel Flores (St. John Bosco HS)
early on, but he worked his way out of every jam.
Flores (1-0) struck out Mike Cole looking with a
runner on second base in the first inning and then
struck out Chad Richardson and got Scott Lambhorn to
line out to second baseman Brandon Pesante (La
Mirada HS) with runners and second and third
base in the fourth inning. By the time he was
through, Flores went 7 1/3 innings, allowing seven
hits and two walks, while he struck out nine
batters. He did allow an RBI single to Colin Rooney
in the fifth inning for the only Gaucho run.
The Falcons
got on the board in the bottom of the first inning
when Pesante opened by reaching base on a throwing
error from Rooney at shortstop. Topete sacrificed
him to second base and Pena drew a walk before Blood
singled him home. In the fourth inning, freshman
AJ Rodriguez (Gahr HS) led off the a base
hit, moved to second base on a sacrifice and scored
on a throwing error by second baseman Erik Mura.
Blood picked up his third hit and second RBI of the
day in the eighth inning, scoring Topete, who
singled and stole second base. |
