Cerritos College sophomore pitcher John Ortega
(Downey HS) showed complete control from first
pitch to last, as the limited Glendale College to just
two singles and struck out a career-high 15 batters in a
4-0 non-conference win at Kincaid Field on Sunday
afternoon. Ortega, who improved to 3-0, walked just one
batter and only had one runner reach second base, which
was the result of an error. The Falcons (8-2), who just
finished a six-game homestand, will now travel to Irvine
Valley College on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m. game. Glendale
fell to 3-5.
The Falcons
got all the offense Ortega would need in the bottom
of the second inning without hitting the ball out of
the infield. Freshman third baseman Chad
Ostahowski (Lake Elsinore HS) reached
base on an error to start the inning, followed
freshman catcher AJ Rodriguez (Gahr HS)
getting hit by a pitch. Freshman outfielder Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) then tried to
sacrifice the runners over with a bunt, but the ball
hugged the edge of the grass up the third base line
and stayed in for an infield single. After freshman
outfielder Pat Radford (Long Beach Wilson
HS) hit into a fielder’s choice that cut down
Ostahowski at home, freshman designated hitter
Mario Romero (Los Altos HS) picked up an
RBI on a fielder’s choice, as pinch-runner TD
Estrada (La Serna HS) scored.
The team
picked up two more runs in the bottom of the third
inning when sophomore outfielder Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS) left off with a base hit. After
he was advanced to second base on an infield out by
sophomore first baseman Trever Blood (La
Mirada HS), sophomore shortstop Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS) drilled a base hit to center
field, scoring Topete, while Pena took second base
on the throw home. After the second out was
recorded, Rodriguez drilled a double off the wall
for an RBI. Topete drove in the team’s final run
with an RBI single in the seventh inning that scored
Romero, who was hit by a pitch and advanced to
second base on a wild pitch.
All the
while Ortega was showing masterful control, as seven
of his strikeouts were third outs, including the
last five innings, while six of them were caught
looking. |
