Leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the eighth
inning, the Cerritos College baseball team was on the
brink of recording their second shutout in a row in a
non-conference game on Tuesday against Irvine Valley
College. Freshman starter Tony Peraza (La
Mirada HS) went the first six innings and allowed
just six hits and struck out three. After pitching a
perfect seventh inning, freshman reliever Doug Wogee
(Sonora HS) surrendered three runs, and the
Falcons lost, 3-1. The setback against the Lasers was
the second this season for Cerritos, who dropped to 8-3,
while Irvine Valley improved to 6-4. The Falcons will
now travel to Golden West College on Thursday for a 2:00
p.m. contest.
In the
eighth inning, Wogee gave up a lead-off home run to
Brian Ferrante to tie the game at 1-1. After
recording two outs, the Lasers then singled and drew
a walk to put runners at first and second base. Alex
Agortsas then singled up the middle for an RBI, with
Wogee then being relieved by freshman George
Sanchez (Gahr HS). Irvine Valley closed
out their comeback with another RBI single by Matt
Reyes.
For the
Falcons in the ninth inning, freshman David Neff
(John Glenn HS) drew a walk with one out, but
freshman outfielder Pat Radford (Long
Beach Wilson HS) ended the game when he lined
into a double play.
Cerritos
scored their lone run in the top of the fourth
inning when sophomore first baseman Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS) singled with two outs and came
home on a triple by sophomore shortstop Jerry
Pena (Los Altos HS). Blood led the team
with two hits, as the Falcons had just five on the
day. |
