For the second consecutive game, the Cerritos
College baseball team saw an early 1-0 lead vanish, as
they allowed five unanswered runs to Golden West College
on Thursday in a 5-1 non-conference loss. In both of the
losses, the Falcons were receiving fine starting
pitching, but saw it get away from them, thanks to a
lead-off home run, that started the downfall. The loss
drops the Falcons record to 8-4 on the year, while the
Rustlers improved to 8-3. Cerritos will now host
Fullerton College on Saturday at noon.
The Falcons
took their 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third
inning when freshman catcher Mario Romero (Los
Altos HS) singled with one out, followed by
another base hit from freshman second baseman
Brandon Pesante (La Mirada HS). After
sophomore outfielder Anthony Topete (Norwalk
HS) reached base on an error to load them up,
sophomore first baseman Trever Blood (La
Mirada HS) drive in Romero with a sacrifice fly.
The team would only get four more hits the rest of
the game.
With
sophomore starter Miguel Flores (St. John
Bosco HS) staked to the early lead, he was able
to mow down Rustler batters and had seven strikeouts
through the first four innings. Despite his
punch-out ability, Flores had to work out of a bases
loaded jam in the first inning by striking out the
next two batters, and got the third out on a
strikeout in the bottom of the fifth inning with the
bases loaded after Golden West took a 2-1 lead. A
balk and wild pitch by Flores put one of the runners
in scoring position, while he also walked two in the
inning.
But it was
the seventh inning that gave the Rustlers their
cushion, as they added three more runs. After Billy
Silvestri led off with a solo home run, Flores gave
up a base hit and was relieved by freshman Jay
Heirigs (Rocklin HS). The first batter
hit into a fielder’s choice, but sophomore shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los Altos HS) threw the
ball away, which put runners at second and third
base. An infield ground out scored one run, while
two walks set up a run-scoring single to close out
the scoring. |
