Offense has been at a minimum these days for the
Cerritos College baseball team. Coming into their
non-conference game at home against Los Angeles Valley
College on Monday, the Falcons had only scored two runs
in their last three games, all losses. After seeing
their scoreless streak extended to 17 innings, Cerritos
scored a run in the bottom of the third inning. But, it
wasn’t enough in a 10-4 loss to the Monarchs (7-4),
dropping the team’s record to 8-6 after their fourth
loss in a row. They get no rest, as they head to Chaffey
College for a 2:00 p.m. game on Tuesday.
The Monarchs
got to freshman starting pitcher
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS) in the first inning
for two runs and then added another in the third
inning. After a walk and stolen base by lead-off
hitter JP Hollywood put a runner in scoring
position, Mike Sanchez had an RBI single and came
around to score on a run-scoring double by Dominic
Necuechea.
Even though
they weren’t scoring runs, the Falcons had runners
on base in eight of the nine innings. In the first
inning, freshman third baseman
Pat
Radford (Long Beach Wilson HS)
singled and after sophomore shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS) and sophomore first baseman
Trever
Blood (La Mirada HS) both walked, the
team had the bases loaded. But, freshman catcher
Mario
Romero (Los Altos HS) grounded into
an inning-ending double play. It was more of the
same in the second inning, as freshman second
baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) led off the a
single, while a bunt single by freshman outfielder
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) put runners on
first and second base. Freshman designated hitter
Doug Wogee
(La Mirada HS) was then hit by a pitch to
load the bases. But, freshman outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS) struck out, sophomore
outfielder
Anthony
Topete (Norwalk HS) hit into a
fielder’s choice and Radford struck out to end the
threat.
All the
while, the Monarchs were pounding out hits in
succession and getting runs to cross the plate. It
was a 6-1 game in the fifth inning when Sanchez was
removed for Wogee. Although Sanchez struck out six
in his 4 2/3 innings, he allowed eight hits, three
wild pitches and two walks in surrendering six runs.
By the end of the day, LA Valley had finished with
19 hits against four Cerritos pitchers, with
Hollywood leading them with four, while Necuechea
added three hits and four RBI.
Cerritos
left eight runners in scoring position out of the 12
they left on base on the day. They were the
recipients of seven walks and had two runners hit by
pitches, while they collected 11 hits. Topete drove
in a pair with a bases loaded single in the eighth
inning, while Pesante and Gaylord led the team with
two hits each. |
