Looking to turn things around in the first month of
the season, the Cerritos College baseball coaching staff
shuffled their lineup around to try and shake the rust
off the offense. The Falcons did take a 1-0 lead against
Chaffey College on Tuesday, but wound up losing, 2-1,
which marked their fifth straight loss, as the team fell
to 8-7 on the year. Cerritos will now travel to
Fullerton College at 2:00 p.m. for their final
non-conference game on Thursday.
With
sophomore
Miguel
Flores (St. John Bosco HS) on the
mound, the team knew they would have a chance to
stay in the game. He didn’t disappoint, as the
pitched six solid innings and allowed one run on
four hits and struck out 12 batters. Freshman
John
Garcia (El Rancho HS) came on in
relief and pitched a solid seventh inning. But in
the eighth, he allowed a leadoff double to Jonathan
Constantino, who was then sacrificed to third on a
bunt by Mychal Johnson. Ryan Delgado then broke the
tie with a sacrifice fly.
In the top
of the ninth, the Falcons went down in order and
suffered the loss. They took their 1-0 lead in the
top of the third inning when freshman second baseman
Brandon Pesante (La Mirada HS) led
off with a base hit and was advanced to second base
on a sacrifice bunt by freshman catcher
Mario
Romero (Los Altos HS). After the
second out was recorded, sophomore first baseman
Trever
Blood (La Mirada HS) drove home
Pesante with a base hit.
Cerritos had
a chance to break the 1-1 tie in the top of the
seventh inning after freshman
TD
Estrada (La Serna HS) singled and
advanced to third base on a double by Pesante. But,
when Romero bounced one back to Panther pitcher Tim
Redmon, Estrada was caught off the bag and tagged
out. Sophomore shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS) then flew out to end the
inning. The Falcons also stranded freshman
Doug Wogee
(Sonora HS) at third base in the eighth
inning after he doubled and advanced to third on a
ground out. |
