As one of the team’s starting pitchers, freshman
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS) doesn’t expect to
see many opportunities to bat for the Cerritos
College baseball team. But, on Tuesday, Sanchez was
inserted as the team’s designated hitter and
responded with two doubles, including an RBI in the
sixth inning, to help lead the Falcons to a 3-1
South Coast Conference win at home against Los
Angeles Harbor College. Cerritos (10-8 overall, 2-0
SCC) will now travel to Long Beach City College
tomorrow for a 2:00 p.m. conference game.
All three of
the Falcons runs came courtesy of Seahawk (5-11,
1-1) errors. After staking LA Harbor to a 1-0 lead
in the top of the first inning, Cerritos scored
twice in the third inning when LA Harbor left
fielder Dustin Warren dropped a two-out fly ball
that allowed two runs to score. Sanchez led off the
inning by doubling on the first pitch from Carlos
Pinedo (1-4), while sophomore outfielder
Anthony
Topete (Norwalk HS) was hit by a
pitch. With two outs, freshman second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) hit a deep fly
ball to left field, where Warren dropped the ball,
allowing both runs to score.
Sophomore
starting pitcher
Miguel
Flores (St. John Bosco HS) pitched
the first eight innings and worked his way out of
several tight spots to run his record to 2-1 on the
year. In the sixth inning, he surrendered a one-hit
base hit to Alex Salgado and then committed a
throwing error on a ball hit back to him, which put
runners at first and second base. After an infield
out advanced the runners, he induced a ground ball
to Warren for the third out of the inning. In the
eighth inning, Matt Hibbert led off with a base hit
against Flores before Salgado drew a walk. The next
batter, Tyson Hawley, tried to advance the runners,
but his bunt went back to Flores, who threw to third
base to cut down the runner. After a two-out walk
loaded the bases, Luis Vizcaino grounded out to end
the threat.
The Falcons
took their two-run lead in the sixth inning when
freshman third baseman
Pat
Radford (La Mirada HS) was ruled safe
at first base when LA Harbor shortstop Rene
Rodriguez’s throw pulled Joey Guillen off first
base. Sanchez then followed with his second double
of the game to drive him home.
In the ninth
inning, freshman
John
Garcia (El Rancho HS) gave up a
lead-off base hit and then set the next three
batters down to end the game and earn his first save
of the season. |
