The Cerritos College baseball team remained
undefeated in South Coast Conference play with their
2-0 road win against Long Beach City College on
Thursday afternoon. The Falcons, who scored both of
their runs in the top of the eighth inning, improved
to 11-8 overall and 3-0 in the SCC, while the
Vikings fell to 11-6 and 1-1. Cerritos will now
travel to Brookside Park to face Pasadena City
College at 12:00 p.m. in another conference game on
Saturday.
With Falcon
freshman
Tony
Peraza (La Mirada HS) in a pitching
dual with LBCC’s Randy Serrato through the first
seven innings, Cerritos finally broke through in the
eighth inning. Sophomore outfielder
Anthony
Topete (Norwalk HS) led off with an
infield single and moved to second base on a
sacrifice bunt by freshman outfielder
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS). Serrato then
tried to pick off Topete at second base and threw
the ball away, which allowed him to move to third
base. Freshman second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) was then
intentionally walked, which sent up sophomore
shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS), who singled up the middle for
the first run of the game. Sophomore first baseman
Trever
Blood (La Mirada HS) then singled
down the left field line to drive in Pesante.
Peraza (2-1)
went seven solid innings to earn the win and only
had to work out of one situation where a runner was
in scoring position. In the third inning, Hector
Iribe singled with one out, stole second base and
advanced to third on a throwing error by freshman
catcher
Mario
Romero (Los Altos HS). Iribe was then
stranded when Peraza got Trevor Costin to ground
out.
Freshman
Doug Wogee
(Sonora HS) came on in relief in the eighth
inning and quickly inherited a runner at second base
after Michael Schultz led off with a double off
Peraza. Iribe then grounded out, which advanced
Schultz to third base, but Wogee got the next two
batters to end the inning. The Vikings went down in
order in the ninth inning and Wogee earned his first
save of the season. |
