Sophomore right-handed pitcher John Ortega (Downey
HS) was in mid-season form for the Cerritos College
baseball team in their season opener on Saturday
afternoon at Kincaid Field. Ortega, who was an All-State
selection last season, pitched seven shutout innings
against Rio Hondo College and struck out six, as the
Falcons recorded a 7-0 victory. Weather permitting,
Cerritos will host Glendale College at 1:00 p.m. on
Sunday.
After
allowing a single and hit batter in the first
inning, Ortega retired 16 of the next 18 Roadrunner
batters and allowed just four singles in the game.
He did give up two singles in the top of the seventh
inning and then stepped aside to allow sophomore
Miguel Flores (St. John Bosco HS) to
pitch the final two innings, where he struck out two
and did not allow a hit.
At the
plate, Cerritos collected 12 hits and opened the
scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first
inning. After sophomore outfielder Anthony Topete
(Norwalk HS) was hit by a pitch, sophomore
shortstop Jerry Pena (Los Altos HS)
drew a one-out walk. With two outs, freshman third
baseman Chad Ostahowski (Lake Elsinore HS)
drilled a two-run double into center field, while
freshman AJ Rodriguez (Gahr HS)
followed with a run-scoring single. Freshman
outfield Pat Radford (Long Beach Wilson HS)
drove home Ostahowski, who doubled, in the third
inning, while the Falcons picked up their other
three runs in the sixth inning.
With one
out, Radford doubled and then came home on a
pinch-hit double from freshman Doug Wogee (Sonora
HS). After freshman catcher Mario Romero
(Los Altos HS) singled, freshman second
baseman Brandon Pesante (La Mirada HS)
drive in Wogee, while pinch-runner Brian Gaylord
(La Mirada HS) scored the final run of the
game on a wild pitch.
On the day,
Radford led the team with three hits, while Pesante,
Ostahowski, Wogee and Romero each had two hits. |
