Taking advantage of five Palomar College errors, the
Cerritos College baseball team scored six times in the
top of the eighth inning and registered a 7-3 road win.
The victory improved the Falcons record to 2-1, while
the Comets dropped to 0-2. The team will remain down in
the San Diego area and face San Diego Mesa at 2:00 p.m.
on Friday.
Trailing 2-1
heading into the top of the eighth inning, sophomore
outfielder Anthony Topete (Norwalk HS)
singled and came home on a one-out double by
sophomore first baseman Trever Blood (La
Mirada HS) to tie the game at 2-2. Then, with
two outs, freshman third baseman Chad Ostahowski
(Lake Elsinore HS) reached on a throwing
error before freshman catcher AJ Rodriguez (Gahr
HS) singled home Topete. Freshman outfielder
Brian Gaylord (La Mirada HS) followed by
reaching on an error, which allowed Ostahowski to
score, while freshman outfielder Doug Wogee (Sonora
HS) loaded the bases with a single.
That set up
freshman David Neff (John Glenn HS),
who hit a ground ball to first base, where it was
botched. By the end of the play, another error by
the first baseman allowed all three runs to score
and the Falcons had themselves a 7-2 advantage.
Freshman
Jay Heirigs (Rocklin HS), who picked up
the third out in the seventh, pitched the eighth
inning to earn the win, while sophomore Miguel
Flores (St. John Bosco HS) pitched the
ninth inning for the third game in a row. Sophomore
starter John Ortega (Downey HS) went
the first six innings and surrendered two runs on
three hits, while he struck out five and walked
four.
At the
plate, the Falcons recorded four of their six hits
in the day in the eighth inning, as they struggled
to generate offense for the second game in a row.
Six different players had one hit each for Cerritos.
