After six innings of their South Coast Conference
game, the Cerritos College baseball team was locked
in a 3-3 tie with Pasadena City College in a game
played at Brookside Park on Saturday. But, the
Falcons broke the game open with two runs in the top
of the seventh inning and six more in the eighth and
went on for an 11-4 victory. The win was the fourth
straight SCC win to start the season for Cerritos
(12-8 overall, 4-0 SCC), while the Lancers fell to
1-14 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Falcons
will now host Los Angeles City College at 2:00 p.m.
on Tuesday.
Helping
break the game open was some sloppy pitching by the
Lancers, who uncorked five wild pitches and also
walked 12 batters. In the seventh inning, freshman
outfielder
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) led off with a
base hit, while sophomore shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS) drew a walk. After an out was
recorded, freshman designated hitter
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS) picked up an RBI on
a sacrifice fly, while a bases loaded hit by pitch
of freshman
Pat
Radford (Long Beach Wilson HS)
accounted for the other run.
Cerritos
only had three hits in their six-run eighth inning,
while two Lancer errors kept the inning alive.
Sophomore outfielder
Anthony
Topete (Norwalk HS) was hit by a
pitch to start the inning before Gaylord reached on
an error. After a double-steal, Pena drove in a run
with a single, while Gaylord came home on a wild
pitch. Sophomore first baseman
Trever
Blood (La Mirada HS) followed with an
RBI double, while Sanchez recorded his third of four
hits with an RBI single of his own. Another run
scored on a wild pitch, while a second error in the
inning led to the final run.
Freshman
pitcher
John
Garcia (El Rancho HS) got his first
start of the season and went 3 1/3 innings before
coming out in favor of sophomore
John
Ortega (Downey HS), who earned the
win. Garcia allowed three runs on four hits and
struck out two, while Ortega (5-1) punched out nine
batters and allowed six hits.
Sanchez was
the only Falcon with more than one hit on the day,
while Gaylord and Pena each scored twice, as did
Sanchez. Since taking over the designated hitter
duties, Sanchez is batting .583 with three doubles
and three RBI. |
