03.04.08 - OFFENSIVE OUTPUT LEADS TO CONFERENCE WIN

The Cerritos College baseball team opened up a 9-1 lead over Los Angeles City College in their South Coast Conference game on Tuesday and went on to record a 9-5 victory. The win was the fifth in a row for the Falcons, who improved to 13-8 overall and 5-0 in conference action, while the Cubs fell to 3-12 and 0-4. Cerritos will look to stay unbeaten in SCC play when they host Compton College at noon on Saturday.

The Falcons broke open a 2-1 game with three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and added four more in the fifth inning. In the fourth, freshman outfielder David Neff (John Glenn HS) drew a two-out walk and stole second base. He then came home on a base hit by sophomore outfielder Anthony Topete (Norwalk HS). The hits kept coming, as freshman outfielder Brian Gaylord (La Mirada HS) followed with a run-scoring double, while sophomore shortstop Jerry Pena (Los Altos HS) finished it off the an RBI triple to the deepest part of the field.

The bats remained hot in the fifth inning when freshman catcher AJ Rodriguez (Gahr HS) doubled with one out and scored on a double by freshman Brandon Pesante (La Mirada HS). Freshman third baseman Pat Radford (Long Beach Millikan HS) followed with a run-scoring single, with Neff driving in Radford with a double of his own. The final run of the inning came courtesy of a throwing error.

Los Angeles City made it interesting with a four-run eighth inning off sophomore Miguel Flores (St. John Bosco HS), who came on in relief of freshman George Sanchez (Gahr HS). Sanchez went the first three innings and allowed one run on two hits and struck out three, while Flores (3-1) picked up the win by pitching five innings and recorded four strikeouts. Freshman Doug Wogee (Sonora HS) came on to pitch the ninth inning.

At the plate, Topete led the team with three hits and scored twice, while Gaylord and Pena each added two hits. Brian Perras led LA City with four hits on the day.
