The Cerritos College baseball team opened up a 9-1
lead over Los Angeles City College in their South
Coast Conference game on Tuesday and went on to
record a 9-5 victory. The win was the fifth in a row
for the Falcons, who improved to 13-8 overall and
5-0 in conference action, while the Cubs fell to
3-12 and 0-4. Cerritos will look to stay unbeaten in
SCC play when they host Compton College at noon on
Saturday.
The Falcons
broke open a 2-1 game with three runs in the bottom
of the fourth inning and added four more in the
fifth inning. In the fourth, freshman outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS) drew a two-out walk and stole
second base. He then came home on a base hit by
sophomore outfielder
Anthony
Topete (Norwalk HS). The hits kept
coming, as freshman outfielder
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) followed with
a run-scoring double, while sophomore shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS) finished it off the an RBI
triple to the deepest part of the field.
The bats
remained hot in the fifth inning when freshman
catcher

Rodriguez (Gahr HS) doubled with one
out and scored on a double by freshman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS). Freshman
third baseman

Radford (Long Beach Millikan HS)
followed with a run-scoring single, with Neff
driving in Radford with a double of his own. The
final run of the inning came courtesy of a throwing
error.
Los Angeles
City made it interesting with a four-run eighth
inning off sophomore
Miguel
Flores (St. John Bosco HS), who came
on in relief of freshman
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS). Sanchez went the
first three innings and allowed one run on two hits
and struck out three, while Flores (3-1) picked up
the win by pitching five innings and recorded four
strikeouts. Freshman
Doug Wogee
(Sonora HS) came on to pitch the ninth
inning.
At the
plate, Topete led the team with three hits and
scored twice, while Gaylord and Pena each added two
hits. Brian Perras led LA City with four hits on the
day. |
