When the Cerritos College baseball team was looking
for a spark from their offense, little did they know
it would come from one of their pitchers. Freshman
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS), who has appeared in eight
game, including five as a starter, was inserted as
the team’s designated hitter five games ago.
Including his 3-for-3 day and two walks in the
Falcons 8-1 South Coast Conference win over Compton
College on Saturday afternoon at Kincaid Field,
Sanchez is batting .556 (10-for-18) and has a .778
slugging percentage. The win improved the Falcons
record to 14-8 overall, while they remain atop the
SCC with a 6-0 record, As for the Tartars, they
dropped to 10-9 overall and 3-4 in conference play.
Cerritos will now travel to El Camino College on
Tuesday for a 2:30 p.m. start.
Sanchez
started the offense on Saturday, as his RBI double
down the right field line drove in freshman
outfielder
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS), who singled.
Prior to the double by Sanchez, sophomore first
baseman
Trever Blood (La Mirada HS) gave the
Falcons a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly, which scored
sophomore outfielder
Anthony
Topete (Norwalk HS) from third base.
Sanchez also singled and scored in the third inning,
was walked twice and concluded the day with a base
hit in the eighth inning.
Sophomore
starting pitcher
John
Ortega (Downey HS) improved his
season record to 6-1, as he pitched the first eight
innings and allowed three hits and one run, while
striking out nine. Through the first six innings,
Ortega was throwing a no-hitter and had faced just
one batter over the minimum until Collearen Randolph
led off with a single up the middle. Sophomore
Miguel
Flores (St. John Bosco HS) pitched
the ninth inning and struck out two.
The Falcons
picked up two runs in the third inning, with
freshman second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) driving in
Blood with a double, while Sanchez scored on a wild
pitch. In the fourth, freshman outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS), who had his best game of the
season, led off with a base hit and stole second.
After a wild pitch advanced him to third, he came
home on a sacrifice fly by Gaylord. Neff (3-for-4)
drove in a run in the fifth inning with a base hit,
as did Topete. The final run of the game came in the
seventh, when a throwing error allowed freshman
third baseman
Pat
Radford (Long Beach Wilson HS) to
score.
On the day,
Sanchez and Neff each had three hits, while the team
collected 13 hits and five walks on the day. Neff
also made an outstanding catch on a fly ball that
was tailing away from him, as he dove and caught the
ball. |
