On the
strength of their 11-2 home win over Mt. San
Antonio College on Thursday, the Cerritos
College baseball team concluded the first round
of South Coast Conference play with an 8-0
record, while they improved to 16-8 overall. The
Falcons will now host East Los Angeles College
in the first of a home-and-home series at noon
on Saturday.
Cerritos
jumped on the Mounties (8-15, 4-4) from the
outset, scoring three times in the first inning,
with freshman second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS)
delivering a two-run single after sophomore
Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS) doubled in the first run
of the game. Blood, who reached base three
times, was playing in right field for the first
time this year.
Sophomore
starting pitcher
John Ortega (Downey
HS) was the recipient of the offense, as he
collected his seventh win of the year after
pitching eight innings. During his outing,
Ortega limited Mt. SAC to just five hits and
struck out five, while not allowing a walk.
Freshman
Jay
Heirigs (Rocklin HS)
finished out the game by pitching the ninth
inning.
In addition to
the three RBI and three runs scored by Blood,
Pesante (three RBI), freshman outfielder
Brian Gaylord (La Mirada HS)
and sophomore shortstop
Jerry Pena
(Los Altos HS) all added two hits. Pena
also scored three times, while freshman
George Sanchez (Gahr
HS) drove in three runs with a bases loaded
double in the fourth inning. He was inserted at
first base for the first time.
