03.15.08 -BIG INNING BY HUSKIES
SNAPS WINNING STREAK
After
winning their first eight South Coast
Conference games, the Cerritos College
baseball team suffered their first defeat,
after East Los Angeles College broke open a
3-1 game by scoring five runs in the seventh
inning and recorded an 8-3 win on Saturday.
With the loss, the Falcons drop to 16-9 on
the season and 8-1 in
SCC play, while the Huskies improved
to 14-7 on the year and 6-3 in conference
action. Cerritos will now travel up north to
play three games during Spring Break,
starting at Fresno City College on Tuesday.
After falling behind 3-0 heading into the
bottom of the fourth inning, Cerritos got
one run back in the bottom of the stanza
when sophomore shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los Altos HS)
led off with a double. After a balk advanced
him to third base, sophomore first baseman
Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS) singled home Pena.
The
Falcons collected just six hits on the day
and
didn't get another runner into
scoring position until the seventh inning
when freshman catcher
Mario Romero (Los Altos HS)
singled and freshman outfielder
David Neff (John Glenn HS)
drew a two-out walk.
In the
eighth inning, Pena walked and moved to
second base before he scored on a throwing
error by East LA third baseman Joe
Rosalez off a ground ball by freshman
second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada
HS). The team's third run came in the
ninth on a run-scoring single by Pena that
drove in sophomore outfielder
Anthony
Topete (Norwalk HS).
