After dropping into a first
place tie in the South Coast
Conference, the Cerritos College
baseball team utilized a
five-RBI day from freshman
George Sanchez (Gahr
HS) to post a 7-2 road win
over Los Angeles Harbor College
on Saturday. With the win, the
Falcons are now 9-2 in
SCC play and 18-12
overall, while the Seahawks
dropped to 10-19 and 5-6. The
two teams will finish off their
series on Tuesday, with the
Falcons hosting at 2:30 p.m.
Cerritos has won both games of
the series this season.
With sophomore ace
John Ortega (Downey
HS) on the mound, the
Falcons knew they would be in
the hunt for a win, and Ortega
did not disappoint. He limited
the Seahawks to just one hit
through 7 1/3 innings and went
on to pick up his eighth win of
the year, as he struck out
seven. Although freshman
John Garcia (El
Rancho HS) struggled in his
abbreviated time on the mound,
freshman
Jay
Heirigs (Rocklin
HS) came on to pitch the
final 1 2/3 innings to earn his
first save of the year.
As for Sanchez, who is batting
.528 with 16 RBI in conference
play, he broke open a close 1-0
game in the top of the sixth
inning with a three-run home
run. Then, in the ninth inning,
he put the game out of reach
with a bases loaded single,
providing him with his biggest
offensive output of the year.
In the sixth, sophomore
shortstop
Jerry Pena (Los
Altos HS) led off with a
double and moved to third base
on a single by sophomore
Trever Blood
(La Mirada HS). That
set the table for Sanchez, who
drilled the 1-0 offering from
Carlos
Pinedo for his second
home run of the year. The
innings was kept alive after a
two-out error and a single by
freshman third baseman
Jared Olsen (Sonora
HS) allowed sophomore
outfielder
Anthony
Topete (Norwalk
HS) to drive in a run with
a base hit.
Sanchez, Olsen and freshman
second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La
Mirada HS) led the Falcons
with two hits apiece.
