During the Spring
Break, the Cerritos College baseball team found
themselves in several wild games. The Falcons, who
split their four contests, opened with a 7-6 win
that went 11 innings and then followed that by
getting shellacked by Fresno City College, 22-6. The
team rebounded with a 10-3 win over Allan Hancock
College and then concluded with a football-like
21-20 loss at the hands of Cuesta College in 10
innings. Cerritos (19-14) now resumes South Coast
Conference play with a critical 2:30 p.m. game at
home on Wednesday against El Camino College.
To start with, the
41 runs that were scored in the final game were the
most in any Cerritos game in its history, with the
old record being 36 in a 25-11 win over College of
the Canyons in 1989. In addition, freshman second
baseman
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) had a phenomenal game.
Not only did Terry go 5-for-6 with five RBI and five
runs scored, he also clubbed a pair of home runs and
added a triple. It was a Terry solo home run in the
ninth inning that send the game into extra inning,
and he was on deck when the final out was recorded.
The Falcons appeared to have the bases loaded for
Terry in the 10th inning, but a base running error
accounted for the third out.
In the win over
Oxnard, freshman
Efren
Gutierrez (Gahr HS) made his
first start of the season and pitched four innings
while allowing just one run (unearned) and he struck
out three. Trailing 6-4 heading into the eighth
inning, sophomore third baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) singled
to lead off the inning, followed by a walk to Terry.
After an out was recorded, freshman first baseman
Jacob Eaton (Calvary Chapel HS)
singled in a run, while sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes
(Bellflower HS) tied the game on an RBI
ground out. Sophomore second baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) drove
in the winning run in the 11th inning. Freshman
pitcher
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS)
pitched the final four innings in relief to earn the
win.
Sophomore pitchers
George Sanchez (Gahr HS) and
Steve
Blanchette (Schurr HS)
combined to pick up the win against Allan Hancock,
with Blanchette earning the save. Terry went 3-for-3
in the game with two walks, and was a home run away
from hitting for the cycle. Eaton was 3-for-5 with
two RBI, while freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) scored
three times and had two hits.
