Although there are
still six more South Coast Conference games to be
played, the Cerritos College baseball team
approached their game at Kincaid Field on Wednesday
against El Camino College as a must-win situation.
The Falcons, in fourth place with a 10-7 SCC record
entering the game, trailed the first place Warriors,
who entered at 11-4. After an eight-run second
inning helped them open a 12-0 lead, Cerritos went
on to post a 14-7 victory. The win puts the Falcons
at 11-7 in the SCC and 20-14 on the year, while El
Camino is now 11-5 and 22-12-1. Cerritos will now
travel to Jackie Robinson Field on Thursday for a
2:30 game against Pasadena City College.
The Falcons strung
together five straight hits in the second inning to
help them toward their eight runs, while two Warrior
errors assisted them along the way. Sophomore
outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS), freshman designated hitter
Jacob Eaton (Calvary Chapel HS),
sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes
(Bellflower HS), freshman first baseman
Josh Bryan (La Mirada HS) and
freshman outfielder
Lemuel
Johnson (Gahr HS) all had
consecutive singles, which scored the first three
runs of the inning. After an out and an error scored
another run, sophomore third baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) drew a
walk.
Freshman second
baseman
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) followed with a
two-run single, with Neff and Eaton also picking up
RBI singles to close out the scoring in the stanza.
Sophomore pitcher
George Sanchez (Gahr HS) came
up huge in the game, pitching seven solid innings
and struck out eight. He shut down El Camino on
three hits through the first five innings, but
allowed four unearned runs in the sixth
inning, thanks to a pair of Cerritos errors. Sanchez
set down the Warriors in order in the seventh to
improve his record to 6-3 on the season.
The Falcons
continued to hit throughout the game and finished
with 17 hits, with 13 of them being singles.
Freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) went
3-for-6 with a pair of RBI, while Johnson was
3-for-4 with three RBI, two runs scored and a walk.
Eaton was the third player to get three hits on the
day, as he was 3-for-5 with two runs scored, while
Terry (2-for-5, 4 RBI), Neff (2-for-5, RBI), Hayes
(2-for-3 2 runs, RBI, walk) and Bryan (2-for-5 2
runs, RBI) all had multiple hits.
