With the amount of
games remaining dwindling away for the Cerritos
College baseball team to put themselves in position
for a berth in the Southern California Regional
Playoffs, the team is aware that they need to keep
winning to stay in contention. The Falcons won their
third South Coast Conference game in a row after
defeating Pasadena City College, 15-9 at Kincaid
Field on Saturday afternoon. Cerritos is now 13-7 in
conference play and 22-14 overall, as they play a
make-up non-conference game from earlier in the year
tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. when they host Oxnard College.
Entering the day,
Cerritos was a game out of first place and in a
three-way tie for third place with Mt. San Antonio
College (11-6) and El Camino College (11-6), while
Long Beach City College led the pack with a 13-6
record.
The Falcons scored
often in their win over the Lancers, as they saw
runners cross the plate in six of the eight innings
in which they batted. They put two on the board in
the first inning after freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Wilson HS)
doubled to deep center field with one out and then
came home on a base hit up the middle by freshman
designated hitter
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS). After Terry stole
second base, he scored on a base hit by sophomore
outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS).
Staked to an early
lead, freshman starting pitcher
Skye
Severns (Claremont HS) threw 6
1/3 innings and had just two rough innings. After
pitching to the minimum through three innings, the
Lancers scored three in the fourth inning on four
hits, with starting pitcher Tyler Craig helping his
cause with a two-run single to lead the way. Severns
saw his defense turn doubles plays to end the fifth
and sixth inning before leaving in the seventh after
allowing consecutive singles, followed by a pair of
hit batters which forced in a run.
Cerritos responded
each time Pasadena City scored and Terry was
involved in each of those innings. He registered his
12th triple of the season in the third inning, which
scored sophomore third baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) and
came home when Lancer center fielder Enrique Reynoso
overthrew the cutoff. Terry also walked, stole a
base and scored one of the team's three runs in the
fifth inning, as freshman designated hitter
Jacob Eaton
(Calvary Chapel HS) drilled a two-run
triple. Although he didn't score in the sixth
inning, Terry did draw an intentional walk, which
preceded a two-run single by Neff, while Terry had
an RBI base hit in the seventh inning. Terry is now
one triple away from tying the single-season school
record of 13, set by Ron Ewart during the 1985
season.
On the day, Terry
went 3-for-3 with three RBI, three runs scored and a
pair of walks, while Neff (2-for-3, 3 RBI, 2 walks),
Eaton (2-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 runs) and McEleney
(2-for-4, 2 runs) all had productive days.
Additionally, freshman outfielder
Lemuel
Johnson (Gahr HS) doubled in a
run and drove in another on a ground out. For
Pasadena City, Evan Bloem went 3-for-4 with three
RBI, while Craig was 2-for-5 with two RBI.
