Not since the 1990
season has a Cerritos College baseball team scored
in double-figures in six games in a row. The 2009
version of the Falcons accomplished that feat on
Sunday when they pounded out 24 hits in a 20-8
non-conference win over Oxnard College at Kincaid
Field. The win was also the fourth in a row for
Cerritos, which is also their longest of the season,
as they improved to 23-14 on the year, while the
Condors dropped to 11-23. After a pair of byes in
South Coast Conference action, the Falcons will play
their most important game to date, as they travel to
face first place Long Beach City College on Saturday
at noon. Cerritos (13-7) is currently a game behind
the Vikings (14-6), while both teams have four games
remaining.
In putting
together their lofty numbers against Oxnard,
freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS) tied a
school record with six hits, while he reached base
all seven times he batted. He joins Jacob
Ferris (2004) and Keith Lugo
(1977) as the only Falcons to ever get six hits in a
game. Along with the accomplishment of Mayoral,
freshman third baseman
Steve
Hernandez (Downey HS) went
4-for-6 with six RBI, which is one shy of tying the
single-game school record for most runs driven in
for one game. Hernandez, who entered the game with
only 20 at-bats on the season, had a two-run double
in the first inning, a two-run single in the fourth
and RBI base hits in the fifth and sixth innings.
As a team, the
Falcons scored in the first six innings and battered
five Condor pitchers. Cerritos scored four in the
first inning, three in the second, one in the third
and then put the game out of reach with 12 runs over
the next three innings.
There were several
players playing new positions in the game, with
freshman
Josh Bryan
(La Mirada HS) the most notable, as he
started his first game of the season as a pitcher
and it was only his second appearance of the season.
He pitched admirably, as he allowed five runs (four
earned) on seven hits and two strikeouts, as he
pitched into the fourth inning. Sophomore
Steven
Blanchette (Schurr HS) came on
in relief and went the next five innings to pick up
the win. In his time on the mound, Blanchette (3-2)
allowed three runs on four hits and struck out six.
Freshman
designated hitter
Jacob Eaton
(Calvary Chapel HS), who came on as a
pinch-hitter in the fourth inning, went 3-for-5 with
five RBI in limited play, while sophomore catcher
David Neff (John Glenn HS)
stayed hot by going 4-for-5 with three runs scored.
Sophomore
Paul Hayes
(Bellflower HS), seeing his first action in
left field, was 2-for-4 at the plate and scored four
times, while freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Wilson HS)
went 2-for-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.
Sophomore
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) played
in right field for the first time all season and was
2-for-4 with three runs scored.
