Heading into their
crucial South Coast Conference game at Long Beach
City College, the Cerritos College baseball team
wasn't sure if their week-long bye was going to
effect their hot bats. Well, after getting two runs
on four hits in the top of the first inning, it was
apparent that the Falcons were still in overdrive.
Cerritos went on to post a 7-3 win on Saturday
afternoon at Joe Hicks Memorial Field on Saturday
afternoon over the Vikings to move one step closer
to winning the conference title. With the win,
Cerritos is now 14-7 in SCC play, while LBCC dropped
to 16-7. Entering the day, Cerritos, Mt. San Antonio
and El Camino all had 13-7 conference, while the
Vikings were 16-6. The two, who are now in a virtual
tie for first place, will now play on Tuesday at
2:30 p.m. at Kincaid Field and another Falcon win
will put them in first place with two games
remaining. Long Beach City's regular season comes to
an end on Tuesday.
With a runner at
first base and two outs in the top of the first
inning, freshman second baseman
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) singled to put runners
at first and second. After sophomore outfielder
David Neff (John Glenn HS)
singled to load the bases, freshman designated
hitter
Jacob Eaton
(Calvary Chapel HS) drove in both
runs with a base hit.
Sophomore starting
pitcher
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS) took
advantage of his team's offensive prowess and
throttled the Vikings through the first eight
inning. He shut down Long Beach City on seven hits
and struck out six. Sanchez (7-3) allowed a pair of
hits and a walk to start the bottom of the ninth
inning and freshman pitcher
Chris
Villalobos (El Rancho HS)
recorded the final three outs. The Vikings scored
their first run on an infield out, while a dropped
pop fly allowed the other two runs to score.
Cerritos added
another pair of runs in the third and fifth innings
to open a 6-0 lead. In the third, sophomore
shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Millikan HS)
opened with a double down the left field line.
Sophomore first baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS)
recorded an infield single to put runners at the
corners. Neff singled in the third run of the game,
while Eaton doubled in the fourth.
On the day, Neff
went 4-for-5 with an RBI, while Eaton was 3-for-5
with three RBI. McEleney (2-for-5), Gaylord
(2-for-5, 2 runs), Terry (2-for-5) and sophomore
Brandon Pesante (La Mirada HS),
who was 2-for-5 with two RBI and had two hits for
the Falcons.
