Looking to close
out the regular season with wins in their final two
South Coast Conference games with hopes of earning a
playoff bid, the Cerritos College baseball team
defeated last place Los Angeles City College, 11-5
on Thursday at Kincaid Field. The Falcons, who
entered the day tied for third place with Mt. San
Antonio College, are now 15-8 in the SCC and 25-15
on the year. They finish up their regular season on
Friday with a 2:30 p.m. game against the same Cubs
team at Griffith Park. The selection of who advances
to the playoffs will be announced on Saturday
afternoon.
The Falcons strung
together runs in five of the first seven innings to
take an 11-0 lead over LA City before the Cubs
scored the final five runs of the game. Cerritos
started their scoring in the first inning in
record-breaking fashion. After freshman outfielder
Jake Mayoral (Rocklin HS) led
off with a base hit and stole second base, freshman
second baseman
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) hit his school-record
14th triple to score Mayoral. Terry broke the
24-year-old record of 13 triples set by Ron Ewart
during the 1985 season. Terry scored on his triple
when LACC's Mario Cabello's throw to third was wild.
Three more runs
were scored in the fourth inning, as sophomore third
baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) drove
in sophomore outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS), who opened the inning with
a double. After sophomore outfielder
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS) was
walked, the Falcons pulled off a double-steal before
freshman first baseman
Josh Bryan
(La Mirada HS) was walked to load the
bases. A pair of sacrifice flies by sophomore
catcher
Paul Hayes
(Bellflower HS) and Mayoral accounted for
the other two runs.
Freshman starting
pitcher
Skye
Severns (Claremont HS) opened
the game by pitching 5 2/3 innings of no-hit ball
before surrendering a base hit. He shut out the Cubs
into the seventh inning when a passed ball on a
strikeout was followed by a pair of singles and a
double. Severns went on to improve his record to 4-5
after striking out seven and allowing four runs
(three earned).
Bryan swung a hot
bat on the day, as he was just a home run away from
hitting for the cycle, going 3-for-3 with a walk and
two runs scored. Gaylord, who was 2-for-5 with two
RBI and two runs scored, also had a triple, while
Mayoral (3-for-4, 2 RBI, 2 runs) also had a good day
at the plate. Jonathan Arana led LA City by going
2-for-5 with three RBI.
