Sometimes a
rainout isn't the worst thing that could happen.
With wet conditions preventing Cerritos College from
travelling to Palomar College on Wednesday for a
nonconference baseball game, both teams agreed to
move the game to Kincaid Field. The Comets played as
though they had home-field advantage, as they
sprayed the ball all over the field en route to an
11-1 win. The loss dropped Cerritos to 5-4 on the
year, while Palomar improved to 9-4-1. The Falcons
will now travel down to San Diego Mesa College for a
2:00 p.m. nonconference game on Thursday.
From the outset,
Palomar had their bats going and led 10-0 after four
innings with four of their 10 hits going for doubles
into the cavernous gaps in the Cerritos outfield. A
pair of Falcon errors helped the Comets along, as
four of the runs were unearned. Freshman starting
pitcher
Skye
Severns (Claremont HS) lasted
just 2 1/3 innings and surrendered five runs (three
earned), three hits and walked four batters.
The Cerritos bats
had no answer for Palomar starting pitcher Bobby
Shore, who blew past the hitters with his fastball,
while also painting the corners for five called
third strikes. In six innings, Shore allowed four
hits and struck out 11 batters.
Down 2-0 in the
bottom of the first inning, the Falcons saw
sophomore third baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) single
and freshman outfielder
Joe Terry
(Long Beach Poly HS) draw a walk to get two
men on. But sophomore designated hitter
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS) was called
out on strikes to end the inning. After a two-out
single and stolen base from sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes (Bellflower HS) in
the second inning, sophomore outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS) was out on strikes to end
that threat.
In the meantime,
Palomar was putting up multiple-run innings, thanks
to a pair of two-run hits by Matt Hubbard, who went
3-for-3 with four RBI, with Tyler Smith driving in a
pair on the day. The Comets pounded out 17 hits
against four Cerritos pitchers, with Smith, Brenden
Webb, Mitch Ferguson and Anthony Renteria all having
two-hit games.
For Cerritos
freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS), freshman
first baseman
Jacob Eaton
(Calvary Chapel HS) and Hayes all had two
hits. Both sophomore second baseman Brandon Pesante
(La Mirada HS) and Eaton hit two of the hardest
balls on the day, with both careening off the wall
in the deepest part of the ballpark.
