Leading 3-0
against Santa Ana College in a non-conference game
on Saturday, the Cerritos College baseball team saw
the Dons score seven unanswered runs, as the Falcons
were defeated, 7-4. The loss drops the team's record
to 6-5 on the year, while the team will open defense
of their South Coast Conference title on Tuesday
when they play a 2:00 p.m. game at ECC Compton
Center.
The Falcons took a
1-0 lead in the second inning when sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes (Bellflower HS)
reached second base on an error and then came home
on an RBI single from freshman designated hitter
Joe
Terry (Long Beach Poly HS).
Cerritos increased their lead to 3-0 after scoring a
pair of runs in the top of the third inning. Once
again, it was an error that started the inning, as
freshman shortstop
Max
McEleney (Long Beach Wilson
HS) reached base. After freshman outfielder
Marcus
Stevens (Mayfair HS) reached
on a fielder's choice, the team had two runners on
with no outs. Freshman outfielder
Jake
Mayoral (Rocklin HS)
sacrificed the runners over for sophomore second
baseman
Brandon
Pesante (La Mirada HS), who
drove them with a base hit.
Sophomore starting
pitcher
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS) got into
trouble starting in the third inning and allowed two
in the stanza, followed by a single run in the
fourth, while two scored in the fifth before being
removed for sophomore
Steven
Blanchette (Schurr HS). In his
2 2/3 innings of work, Blanchette surrendered two
runs on four hits, while a pair of pitchers went the
rest of the way.
On the day, Terry
had two hits, while he scored a run and drove in
another, with Pesante driving in the team's other
two runs.
