The Cerritos
College baseball team opened out to a 7-3 lead after
three innings against Los Angeles Harbor College in
a South Coast Conference game on Thursday and rode
that to an 8-4 South Coast Conference victory. The
win improved the team's record to 7-6 on the year
while they evened their SCC mark to 1-1. The Falcons
will now host East Los Angeles College at 12:00 p.m.
on Saturday in another conference matchup.
In the top of the
first inning, Cerritos scored a single run after
sophomore third baseman
Brian
Gaylord (La Mirada HS) doubled
with one out and came home on a base hit by freshman
first baseman
Josh Bryan
(La Mirada HS). The Seahawks (7-7, 1-1),
did put two on the scoreboard in the bottom of the
inning, but the Falcons responded with four more in
the second and two in the third inning to give
sophomore starting pitcher
George
Sanchez (Gahr HS) some
breathing room.
Freshman shortstop
Max McEleney (Long Beach Wilson HS)
reached base on an error with one out in the second
and went to second base on a single by freshman
outfielder
Lemuel
Johnson (Gahr HS). The score
was tied at 2 on an RBI single by sophomore
outfielder
David Neff
(John Glenn HS), while the bases were
loaded after LA Harbor catcher Juan Favela was
called for catcher's interference. Gaylord broke the
tie with a two-run single, with freshman outfielder
Jake Mayoral (Rocklin HS)
coming home on a passed ball.
Sanchez, who
improved his record to 3-1 by pitching seven
innings, allowed three runs (two earned) and struck
out eight batters. Aside from the three hits and two
runs he allowed in the first inning, Sanchez limited
the Seahawks to just one run on five hits the rest
of the way. Sophomore
Steven
Blanchette (Schurr HS) pitched
the final two innings and gave up one run on three
hits, while he struck out four. In the team's last
game, the pitchers allowed 10 walks, while Sanchez
surrendered just one on the day.
Johnson broke the
game wide open with a two-run single in the third
inning, with Mayoral driving in the final run with a
base hit in the eighth. On the day, Gaylord went
3-for-5 with two RBI, while sophomore catcher
Paul Hayes (Bellflower HS)
also had three hits. Mayoral (2-for-4, RBI) and
Johnson (2-for-4, 2 RBI) also had multiple-hit
games.
